# Bradiford: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause reading for a moment if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if your engine hasn't run, it is drained and thoroughly purged where your vehicle is around Bradiford.

The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels around Barnstaple, as well as Bradiford, carry on two liquids; the motor gets just the diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, different fillers.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between them.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place in Bradiford?

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

Haste follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Nursery End, or heading home in the car park outside Chichester Arms.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: an unfamiliar car.

No part halts the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Pilton or the middle of Bradiford: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Whether a Bradiford forecourt or a driveway out in Derby, spend a couple of seconds on these before any is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The previous driver knows. Ask when you pick up a hire car or fleet car — from Barnstaple's car park, perhaps — not when the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

Wherever in Devon the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Northfield Lane.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop when your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip gently through the built-in spout.

- Shut the cap, and check once more — confirm the diesel cap stayed shut throughout. Only then, start your car.

Find during the second or third stage that the bottle went in the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Never go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Bradiford already?

Short order, then. Top of it: your engine remains unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — so leave it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the Asda, ask the staff to help roll the car away from the petrol pump.

Your own driveway in Bradiford is the place it stays.

Where the engine has run already, pull over safely then switch the vehicle off.

The next junction means where to leave if you are on the M5, under 50 miles from Bradiford.

A short hop across Bradiford is a smaller job than a run towards Exeter, under 50 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## What occurs when we get there in Bradiford

By Pilton Bluecoat Church of England Academy, near St Mary the Virgin or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Both the work and the price rest on three replies — which liquid, which quantity, and if it has run — so our engineers ask.

The price comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter flushed or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a check of the vehicle.

Before leaving, our engineers start the car and check that it's running smoothly.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains across Devon, Bradiford included

Pottington and Raleigh are among the places around Bradiford, a residential suburb, that the same vans cover, over EX postcodes.

Fastest of all: give a EX31 1 postcode for our van.

Shifting the car is not necessary.

The drain happens right there, whether a driveway, a road by Mill Road, or a lay-by towards Pilton Park.

Guessing doesn't help behind Green Lanes, close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to pin down; ring and check.

## The short version for Bradiford people
