# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bradmore: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page aside for now, keep your ignition and engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Around Bradmore, catching it before your motor turns usually means a drain and a full flush on the spot.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels around Goldthorn Hill, like those in Bradmore, run on two fluids; the motor takes just the diesel.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to clean them, from its own tank.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Bradmore: how it happens

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Broad Lane before work, or in the car park at Bradmore Arms on the way home.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — because a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Merridale or bang in the heart of Bradmore.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt around Bradmore or a drive out in Merry Hill. A few seconds, no more.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many motors mark what goes in each inlet just there.

- The handbook says where it is if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Wolverhampton? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, not once the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

Wherever around West Midlands the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Birches Barn Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The two under one flap? So confirm the lid on the diesel side stays closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Bradmore?

Do not start the engine: that is where the short order of things starts.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is sucked from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the Esso, ask the staff to help roll your car away from the pump.

Your own driveway in Bradmore is where it stays.

Already run? Pull over once it is safe, then switch off.

Leave the M54 — under 5 miles out of Bradmore — at the first exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Bradmore is less a job than a run of under 3 miles to Wolverhampton, and so tell us.

## When our technicians get there around Bradmore, what happens?

Outside Merridale Primary School, near Bradmore Community Centre or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Both the work and our price depend on three replies — what fluid, what amount, and if it's run — so we ask.

During the phone call itself, you are told our quote — ahead of anything else.

Then your tank is emptied and your system purged thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Filter cleaned or, if it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of your vehicle.

We do not go until it has been started and is running properly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Bantock Park, a side street near Environmental Award 2006: we drain it where it stands.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Bantock House.

Before you tip, read the cap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Keep it off then call 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, across West Midlands.
