# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Braiswick: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, done just where your vehicle stands around Braiswick, is usually what it needs when caught before the engine runs.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it does not — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels around Braiswick and Horkesley Heath run, with diesel for your motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on every forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which cap to use.

It's in the gap that the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur around Braiswick?

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

On a driveway off Fernlea before work, or in the car park outside The Bricklayer's Pub on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and if it's gone, limp mode follows.

Unfamiliar motors come next, too. Rentals, new motors and company cars place their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Nothing stops the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Braiswick or out in Mile End.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Lexden or a forecourt in Braiswick, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- On plenty of cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Look for it.

- The handbook shows which it lives if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Colchester, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Essex that is.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Braiswick Place.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. When both share a flap, make sure it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Finish once your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip slowly through the own spout.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Discover at the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the wrong tank? That is where you stop.

Skip step five altogether.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Braiswick?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Esso, the Asda or somewhere else.

If you are on your own drive around Braiswick, leave the car where it stands.

When your motor has run by now, pull over safely then turn it off.

Come off the M11 — under 50 miles out of Braiswick — at the next junction.

A short hop across Braiswick is a smaller job than a run towards Colchester, under 3 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Braiswick: what happens when our technicians arrive

Our van reaches the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Vortices, or by Braiswick Primary School.

What fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since the answers set the work and price.

The price is given on the call, before any van leaves.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes away unaided. Hence it counts more.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We do not go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor has not run need roughly half an hour after we are there.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

It is worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

## AdBlue drains round Braiswick, and Essex beyond

Being a residential suburb, Braiswick has the same vans as nearby areas — Colchester, West Bergholt — all the way through CO postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

A postcode starting CO4 5 gets our van to you fastest.

There's no need to move the vehicle.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to Mile End War Memorial, a lay-by on the way to Colchester Golf Club, a driveway.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Myland Saint Michael's, ring and ask instead of guessing.

## The short version for Braiswick motorists

Pour no AdBlue till you have read the cap.

Still AdBlue in the diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can empty it where it stands, anywhere across Essex: keep it off and ring 0333 366 0103.
