# Brambridge: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page aside a moment, keep the ignition and engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your motor hasn't turned, it is drained and fully purged where your vehicle is in Brambridge.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many newer diesels on the roads around Brambridge and Stoke Common carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where spraying cleans the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of vehicles have a single flap for both, while others put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

That gap is where the error lives.

## Brambridge: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Brambridge before work, or in the car park at The Dog and Crook on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as readily, and once the pour starts, no part halts it.

Lords Wood or the heart of Brambridge: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Brambridge forecourt or a drive over in Nobs Crook, spend a few seconds over these before any goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- On plenty of cars, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver knows. Check as you collect a hire car or company car — from Eastleigh's car park, say — not once the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Anywhere in Hampshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Upper Moors Road.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have found the filler and read the cap.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap was never came off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Brambridge already?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting the engine.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the car on.

Filling up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, just where fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Esso, the Shell or somewhere else.

Your own drive in Brambridge is the place it should stay.

Already started? Stop when it is sensible, then turn off.

Come off the M3 — under 3 miles out of Brambridge — at the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Winchester, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Brambridge.

## When our engineers arrive in Brambridge, what occurs?

Our van comes to your car wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside Colden Common Community Centre, or outside Colden Common Primary School.

Those replies settle the work and our quote, so our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run.

Nobody sets off before you've had the price by phone.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, after your tank is drained.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, some metals corrode, and nothing washes out unaided, no matter how long it sits.

The filter flushed or, if it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle.

After that we fire it up and make sure it runs properly before leaving.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run take about half an hour after our technicians arrive.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

## AdBlue drains about Brambridge, and Hampshire beyond

Brambridge is a village, and our teams that cover it also work the towns near it, Colden Common and Highbridge among them, across the SO postcode area.

The van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting SO50 6.

Shifting the vehicle isn't needed.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to The Green, a side street close to Methodist Church: we drain it where it is.

Guessing doesn't help at the back of Brambridge Park House, on a border, or somewhere hard to describe; ring and ask.

## The short version for Brambridge people

First, the cap; after that, the tip.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave it off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it stands, anywhere in Hampshire.
