# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bramley Lings: Why It Occurs

Stop reading for a moment when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the engine has not turned, it is emptied and fully cleaned where the vehicle is around Bramley Lings.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page covers the reasons it occurs and the how to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your motor — yet many modern diesels driven around Bramley Lings and Hellaby hold another fluid too.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to clean them, from its own tank.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Some vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more place the two side by side behind one flap.

Diesel gets filled at each forecourt visit, again and again.

Far less often, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

It's in that gap that the mistake happens.

## Bramley Lings: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Broadlands before work, or in the car park at King Henry on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old motor — because a hire car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and once the pour starts, no part stops it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Bramley Lings or out in Lings Common.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Sunnyside or a forecourt in Bramley Lings.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- Plenty of vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — many cars mark what goes in which inlet just there.

- The handbook shows which it lives when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Rotherham Central, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the warning comes on — wherever you are around South Yorkshire — a routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of The Lings, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish once your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; until then, tip gently using the built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Bramley Lings?

Short order, then. Top of it: the motor stays off.

Leave the ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels switching it on alone starts your fuel pump.

Diluting it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the base rather than blending — and that's where your fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Morrisons, Shell or another — the staff will normally help push the car away, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Bramley Lings.

Where the motor has run already, pull over safely then switch the vehicle off.

On the M18, under a mile from Bramley Lings, that means the next exit.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Bramley Lings makes a smaller job than driving under 10 miles towards Sheffield — so say roughly how far it went.

## Bramley Lings: what takes place when our technicians arrive

Outside Bramley Grange Primary School, near Bill Chafer Centre or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Which fluid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since the replies set both work and quote.

The price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Emptying the tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of it clears out by itself. Hence it counts more.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Before we leave, our technicians fire it up and check that it is running properly.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

It is worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
