# Why It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bramley

Stop here for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor hasn't run, it is emptied and thoroughly purged where the vehicle sits in Bramley.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels on the roads around Bramley and Wickersley carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some motors put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place the two side by side under one flap.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## Bramley: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Main Street, or heading home in the car park outside King Henry.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — because a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

Nothing halts the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Bramley or out in Bramley Lings.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Flanderwell or a forecourt around Bramley, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- Plenty of vehicles give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many motors mark which goes in which filler right there.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Rotherham Central, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere across South Yorkshire, follow this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Howard Road.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you have located the filler and read it.

- The two behind one flap? Then confirm the lid on the diesel filler stays closed before lifting the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then look once more — making sure your diesel cap stayed closed throughout. After that, start the vehicle.

Discover at the second or third step that AdBlue went into the diesel tank? That is where you stop.

Never go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Bramley already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch it on.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Shell, Morrisons or another forecourt will usually help pushing the vehicle clear when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Bramley.

Already run? Pull over once it's sensible, then switch off.

On the M18, under a mile from Bramley, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Bramley is a smaller job than a run towards Doncaster, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Bramley, and what occurs next

Our van reaches your car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, beside Bramley Parish Council Hall, or outside Bramley Grange Primary School.

Both the work and the quote depend on three replies — which liquid, what quantity, and whether it has run — so we ask.

Nobody heads out before you have had the quote by phone.

Then your tank is emptied and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

Once the filter is flushed — or renewed, if needed — fresh diesel is added, and then your car is tested.

Your engine is fired up next and tested to make sure it runs properly, all before our engineers leave.

Unrun cars mostly need a half-hour job after the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

## Bramley and South Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Bramley is a rural village, and our vans that cover it also work the places around it, Lings Common and Sunnyside among them, across the S postcode area.

A postcode starting S66 2 gets our van to you fastest.

The car stays put.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Bramley Park, a side street near St Francis: our engineers drain it where it is.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Bill Chafer Centre? By a border? Asking beats guessing, so ring.

## In short, for Bramley motorists

Always, the cap; after that, the pour.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same, leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it sits, anywhere across South Yorkshire.
