# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Branch End? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, leave your motor off and keep your ignition off.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

The trouble starts once it's sucked through the lines — it will not burn, and it will not combine with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Branch End, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before the motor has run.

Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Branch End: the first few minutes

Do:

- Pull your keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you are at all close to moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the product and the amount, so don't bin it away.

- Ring right where you are. Say a NE43 7 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to search for you.

Do not:

- Moving the vehicle even a few yards is no reason to fire up the motor.

- Plenty of diesels run their pump the instant your ignition goes on, and so keep the car off.

- Pouring in more diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out rather than thinning.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short stretch along New Ridley Road.

- No draining it yourself, either, at the verge.

Rolling the vehicle away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Branch End forecourt you're on, the Esso included.

On your own driveway, don't move it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it is fed into the exhaust, and there it treats the fumes.

A fuel pump is not made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

It drops, since it's heavier than diesel, and settles down where the intake takes its fuel from.

A motor topped up on a driveway in High Mickley overnight and left unstarted is the straightforward case. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but when the engine turns, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

After it is pulled in, the damage takes two forms.

It attacks some metals used in fuel components, attacking whatever it touches till it is removed completely. And once the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that block filters and lodge in tiny passages.

A motor left sitting around Branch End with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more major than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Gulf and you have an issue of thin fuel.

Mixed into your diesel and left unused, it is harmless for now; using the engine does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, since it separates back out — and the next tankful will not rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and turning your key "to see", in the centre of Branch End or out in Mount View Terrace, costs more than almost any other slip.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere across Northumberland the vehicle sits.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Branch End: how it ends up there

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars sits right next to the diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It usually occurs outside the house, from a container bought en route home, rather than at the filling station.

Usually, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Broomley First School the top-up is rushed.

In the evening, a container is tipped in on a driveway near A695.

Or your car is topped up in the car park outside The Blue Bell, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

The least familiar vehicles see it the most — hire cars, brand-new cars, company cars, and the spare vehicle in a home with one of each fuel types.

Wherever across Northumberland, Branch End included, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first response: leave it off.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Branch End?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

The fuel filter and lines have had it sucked along, and any running time carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Maybe coming back from Strawberry Wood, or part way across Branch End, the engine might run lumpy, smoke, drop power, flash your dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

Every start pulls more of it through.

On the Central Motorway East, under 15 miles from Branch End, the first junction is where to leave, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not carrying on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That's why crossing Branch End to park near Stocksfield Baptist Church and a drive of under 15 miles towards Newcastle upon Tyne are very different jobs.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to rinse out once the motor has been started, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has come to a stop.

If it is caught quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Branch End: what it takes

A road by Mount Pleasant Methodist Church, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: anywhere the car has stopped in Branch End, we come to it.

Three answers shape the work, so first our technicians ask what went in, about the amount, and if your motor has turned over.

Right there, the tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one.

What remains from AdBlue will not wash out by itself, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts much more with urea than with petrol.

Next, your filter: cleaned, or replaced if it has to be. After that fresh diesel, and then a check of your vehicle.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once we get there, if your motor hasn't run.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

The last step is to bleed your system on clean diesel.

Then our technicians fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay outside Stocksfield or a drive around Branch End.

Our technicians make sure it runs properly on new diesel before we leave.

Because the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a garage never comes into it.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Branch End itself

Branch End is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Northumberland, with a mix of semi-detached housing and a population of around 993 residents. Branch End lies approximately 11.6 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne, in a setting that offers scenic views of the surrounding countryside. Branch End is characterised by its relatively low elevation of 68 metres above sea level, and its proximity to nearby places such as West Mickley and Painshawfield.

## Branch End and Northumberland: AdBlue drains across the area

West Mickley, Painshawfield and Mickley are among the places around Branch End that the same teams reach, together with much of Northumberland beyond, throughout the NE postcode area.

Close to a border, or anywhere tricky to pin down? Checking is better than guessing, and so ring.

No towing is needed. In Branch End, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you fits: your car is emptied where it stands, whether on a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## Branch End: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job differs, and so no fixed quote would be fair.

Three things change the cost: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight spot behind Stocksfield Cricket Club.

With that in mind, every call from Branch End begins by asking the same trio — which fluid was put in, what quantity, if it ran — ahead of a figure.

Those answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Our price is quoted on the call, before a van leaves; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.

## Still next to the vehicle in Branch End?

Then, do nothing — that's the best step there is.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Tell us it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and if the engine ran, on 0333 366 0103. From there Petrol in Diesel takes over, across Branch End or wherever within Northumberland.
