# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Brandon? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does the engine.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the fuel system pulls it in.

If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and thoroughly rinsed where the car sits in Brandon.

First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## Brandon, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

To do:

- Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.

- Put the hazards on if you're at all near moving traffic.

- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and about how much.

- Give us a postcode starting DH7 8, or whichever street lies closest, and the van finds you directly — so ring wherever you are.

Things not to do:

- Moving the vehicle even a few yards is no reason to start the motor.

- Switching the key to ignition alone sets your pump going on many diesels. Avoid it.

- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't weaken it.

- Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance up Lowland Road.

- Don't try to drain the car yourself at the roadside.

Rolling your vehicle away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Brandon forecourt you are on, the Jet included.

At home, your car remains exactly as it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

From a dedicated reservoir it goes straight to the exhaust, treating what the engine lets out.

Neither side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump can't take urea.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

A vehicle topped up on a drive in Langley Moor yesterday evening and left unstarted is the straightforward case. No pump has pulled the AdBlue up so far — but once the engine turns, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of that tank.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in tiny channels and clog filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it is cleared out.

Overnight, a vehicle parked around Brandon with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; where it is just in that tank, nothing changes.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water gives none of that, and that is a second form of harm.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more major than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have an issue of thin fuel.

No harm comes as long as it sits unused, blended into the diesel — only once the motor runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option.

Whether your car is in Littleburn or the heart of Brandon, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other mistake, and the flush counts more. Why: it won't remain mixed, so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion outlast the following fill.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever in Durham the car has stopped.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Brandon

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, occasionally under one flap — may appear the same. Nobody intends it; many layouts allow it.

It mostly occurs outside the house, from a container bought on the journey home, not at the filling station.

It tends to happen in a few familiar ways.

Rushing, outside Brandon Primary Academy, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up your car.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Oak Tree Mews.

Else, in dim light by Bay Horse by Watson, the vehicle gets refilled by someone using that flap the first time.

It comes up the most in a rental, a brand-new motor, a fleet vehicle, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels — the cars drivers use the least.

Keep it switched off: that is the first response to the same slip, anywhere around Brandon or the remainder of Durham you are.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Brandon?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

It's been drawn through your filter and the fuel lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: any might appear, maybe midway across Brandon or coming back from Addison Park.

Once safe, pull over then turn everything off — with no turning it on again to see.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the A1(M), under 5 miles from Brandon, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

A quick hop across Brandon to the car park by Brandon Library is one thing; heading for Durham, under 3 miles away, is another, because every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So mileage counts.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once your engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped.

Permanent damage is very unusual if it's noticed early.

## What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around Brandon

A road beside St Andrews Methodist Church, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: anywhere the vehicle has come to rest around Brandon, our technicians come to it.

The job depends on three replies, which we get before all else — what got in, the quantity, and whether your engine has run.

Right there, that tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is flushed right through since what remains won't wash out unaided.

Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is flushed — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour visit once our technicians arrive, if your motor has not run.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Finally, the system is bled with new diesel.

You set off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway around Brandon or in a space at Durham.

Before we leave, our technicians check it is running smoothly with fresh diesel in.

We do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never needs to go to a garage.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## AdBlue drains across Brandon and Durham

AdBlue call-outs around Brandon go to vans that cover the towns around it — Browney, Meadowfield plus Brandon Village — and most of Durham beyond, throughout DH postcodes.

If you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask instead of assuming.

Anywhere the vehicle sits — your driveway at home, a side street, a parking area, a filling station — our technicians drain it there, and there's no need to take it to us; which suits Brandon, a rural village, well.

## Brandon: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Each job is different, and so not one single quote is fair.

What moves the price is, first of all, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and after that where the vehicle is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Brandon Welfare Hall.

That is why every call from Brandon starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it's run.

The answers turn a range into a straight price.

Before a van sets off, you hear our price by phone. And you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## In Brandon and still beside your car?

Right now, the most helpful thing to do with your vehicle is to not touch it.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it's AdBlue, roughly how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Brandon or anywhere in Durham.
