# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Breage

Pause reading a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, done just where the car stands in Breage, is normally all it takes when caught before the motor runs.

Reading before the event? Then what follows explains why it happens and how to stop it ever happening.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Diesel feeds the motor — but many current diesels driven around Breage and Ashton hold another fluid as well.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

There's a filler for every tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Breage

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Pellor Fields, or heading home in the car park at Queens Arms.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as easily, and once the tip begins, no part stops it.

It's a few seconds, be it out in Trevena or bang in the centre of Breage.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Carleen or a forecourt around Breage.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at St Erth, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever in Cornwall, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Pellor Road, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish once your tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, pour slowly through the own spout.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Skip stage five altogether.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Breage already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

The attendants at Pace, JET or another forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing your car away when asked.

On your own drive around Breage? Then the vehicle remains put.

Already run? Pull over once it's safe, then turn off.

On the M5, over 50 miles from Breage, that means the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Truro, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Breage.

## Our arrival in Breage, and what happens next

Outside Breage CofE Primary School, close to Breage Village Hall or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

We ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since those answers determine the work and our price.

On the phone call itself, you hear the quote — before dispatch.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, after the tank is emptied.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, some metals corrode, and none of it clears out on its own, however long it is left.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Then our engineers start the engine and confirm it runs smoothly before leaving.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once our technicians arrive, provided the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

## AdBlue drains around Breage, and Cornwall beyond

Breage is a coastal village, and our teams that cover it also work the towns around it, Trew and Penhale Jakes among them, across the TR postcode area.

Give a postcode beginning TR13 9, and our van arrives fastest.

The vehicle stays where it is.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Breage Village Field, a side street close to St Breaca Parish Church: our engineers drain the car where it is.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Village Pump, ring and ask instead of guessing.

## For Breage people, the short version

Read the cap before you tip.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere in Cornwall, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — so leave it off and phone 0333 366 0103.
