# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Brediland

Leave the engine and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Normally, when your engine has not turned, it is drained and thoroughly cleaned where your car is in Brediland.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the reasons it happens and the how to prevent it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many current diesels on the roads round Brediland and Millarston carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on a lot of vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around Brediland

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

On a drive off Dirleton Drive before work, or in the car park at Lord Lounsdale heading home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and once it's empty, limp mode follows.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Lounsdale or the heart of Brediland: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a Brediland forecourt or a drive over in Foxbar, spend a couple of seconds over these before any is poured in.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — many motors mark which belongs in which inlet just there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Paisley Canal, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — wherever you are in Renfrewshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Stop on level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Achray Drive.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and look again that the diesel cap never came off.

Find at the second or third step that the bottle went into the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Never carry on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Brediland?

Don't start your engine: that's where the short order of things starts.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the vehicle on.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

Ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the pump if you are on a forecourt — the JET, the Paisley Mill Service Station or anywhere else.

Your own driveway around Brediland is where it stays.

When the engine has run already, pull over safely then turn the vehicle off.

The next exit means where to leave when you are on the M8, under 3 miles from Brediland.

Distance counts — a short hop across Brediland is a smaller job than driving under 10 miles towards Glasgow — so say about how far it went.

## Brediland: what happens when we turn up

Our van comes to the car wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, near St Columba Church, or outside the local primary school.

Which liquid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask since the replies decide the work and quote.

No one sets off until you have heard our price over the phone.

Then the tank is drained and the fuel system flushed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Once the filter is cleaned — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel is added, and then your vehicle is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run take about half an hour after we arrive.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
