# Brent Mill: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Brent Mill, finding it before your engine turns normally leaves draining and a full flush on the spot.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of newer diesels in Cheston, like those in Brent Mill, carry on two fluids; your motor gets just the diesel.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler for every tank.

Plenty of vehicles share a single flap for both, whereas others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think which filler to use.

It is in that gap that the mistake happens.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen in Brent Mill?

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and running dry leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Long Meadow, perhaps outside The Pack Horse Inn on the way home after work.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's a second factor: a new vehicle.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, carries on.

Whether it takes place in South Brent or the middle of Brent Mill, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt in Brent Mill or a drive over in Lutton. Seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Ivybridge, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere in Devon the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and not rushed beside Aish Lane at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Brent Mill?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

Thinning it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the base rather than mixing — and that is where the fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Shell, Pace or another — the attendants will usually help roll the vehicle away, if you ask.

On your own drive around Brent Mill? Then your car stays where it is.

Already run? Pull over when it's sensible, then switch off.

The next exit means the place to come off if you're on the M5, under 25 miles from Brent Mill.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Brent Mill is less a job than a trip of under 15 miles to Plymouth, so tell us.

## When our engineers get there in Brent Mill, what takes place?

Our technicians come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside South Brent Primary School, close to South Brent Old School Community Centre or on your own driveway.

The answers settle this work and the quote, and so our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody heads out.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, after the tank is emptied.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of that clears out on its own, however long it is left.

A test is last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

The engine is started next and tested to be sure it runs smoothly, all before our engineers head off.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

The vehicle stays where it is.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Sanderspool Cross Recreation Area, a side street close to St Dunstan's: we drain it where it is.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Methodist Church.

## In short, for Brent Mill drivers

Tip nothing until you've read the cap.

Still AdBlue in the diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can empty it wherever it is, wherever in Devon: switch the car off and ring 0333 366 0103.
