# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bridgemary

Keep the motor and ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Caught before the engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Bridgemary.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of modern diesels around Peel Common, as well as Bridgemary, carry on two liquids; the engine takes only the diesel.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in that gap that the error happens.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens in Bridgemary

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and running dry leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Cunningham Drive, perhaps outside White Horse Inn on the way home that evening.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

It's a few seconds, be it out in Bedenham or right in the centre of Bridgemary.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Rowner or a forecourt around Bridgemary, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- On many vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.

- The handbook shows which it is if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Fareham.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the light comes on — anywhere it is around Hampshire — a routine to follow.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Juniper Court.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It works.

- The diesel cap remains on. When both sit under a flap, confirm it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, then check again — confirm the diesel cap remained shut the whole time. Only then, start the car.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Bridgemary?

Brief order, then. Top of that: your motor remains unstarted.

Leave the ignition off as well, since on many diesels it by itself runs the pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the staff to help push the vehicle away from the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Esso, the Asda or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Bridgemary.

Where the engine has been run by now, stop safely and turn the vehicle off.

The next junction is the place to come off when you are on the M27, under 3 miles from Bridgemary.

A short hop across Bridgemary is a smaller job than a run towards Portsmouth, under 5 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival in Bridgemary, and what takes place next

Outside Bedenham Primary School, close to St Matthew's or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

Both the work and our price rest on three answers — what liquid, what quantity, and if it's run — so we ask.

On the call itself, you are told our quote — ahead of anything else.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, once the tank is drained.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes out by itself. That is why it counts more.

Testing is at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

Your engine is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs properly, all before we head off.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

It is worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
