# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bridgend: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Around Bridgend, catching it before the engine runs normally leaves a drain and a full flush where it stands.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels in Pitscottie, like those in Bridgend, run on two fluids; your engine takes only the diesel.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where a spray treats the gas.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Some vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two together under one flap.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

It's in that gap that the mistake happens.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank happen in Bridgend?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Wemysshall Road before work, or in the car park outside Ceres Inn on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and once it is empty, limp mode kicks in.

Unfamiliar cars are second, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company cars place their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

No part halts the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Bridgend or out in Baltilly.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Bellbrae or a forecourt around Bridgend, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- Many motors give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Cupar? Ask the person who drove it last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Fife that is.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and never rushed by Back Latch on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It works.

- Both under one flap? So confirm the cap on your diesel side stays closed before raising the bottle.

- Finish once that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently through its built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find during the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the diesel filler? That's where you stop.

Never carry on to stage five.

## Bridgend: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Short list, then. First: the engine remains unstarted.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

The staff at Tesco, Gulf or any forecourt will normally lend a hand to push your car away when you ask.

If you're on your own drive around Bridgend, leave the vehicle where it is.

When your motor has run already, pull over safely and switch it off.

Bridgend lies under 25 miles from the M90; on it, take the next junction.

A short hop across Bridgend is a smaller job than a run towards Dundee, under 15 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Bridgend: what takes place when we turn up

The van comes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside Ceres Parish Church, or by the local primary school.

Our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run, since the replies decide the work and the quote.

No one heads out until you've had the price over the phone.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of that washes away unaided. Hence it counts more.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we leave, our engineers start the engine and confirm that it is running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after we arrive, as long as the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## About Bridgend, briefly

Bridgend is a suburban area in Fife, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 79 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Bridgend is located near several small villages, including Baltilly, Ceres, and Craigrothie, and is approximately 11 miles from the city of Dundee. Bridgend has a population of around 711 residents, who enjoy the scenic riverside setting. Bridgend is also relatively distant from major cities in England, with London being around 350 miles away.

## Bridgend and Fife: AdBlue drains across the area

Throughout KY postcodes, the vans that cover Bridgend — a residential suburb — work the surrounding places too, Craigrothie and Ceres among them.

Give a postcode beginning KY15 5, and the van arrives fastest.

The car stays put.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near Bannockburn Memorial, a lay-by on the way to Bow Butts, a driveway.

Guessing doesn't help behind The Provost, close to a boundary, or anywhere hard to describe; ring and ask.

## Bridgend drivers: the short version

Before you pour, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless, leave it off and ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it waits, anywhere around Fife.
