# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bridgend

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and your ignition too.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

Being water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble just starts once your pump starts pulling it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Bridgend, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your engine has run.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Bridgend: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- So no one can turn your ignition on, pull the keys away.

- Near moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.

- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.

- The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting PA15 2, or just the name of a street close by, and so call from the car.

Don't do these:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll your car: the engine remains off.

- The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run the pump.

- Adding extra diesel doesn't help: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.

- Leave it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way up Baxter Street.

- Beside the road, don't attempt draining it yourself.

Rolling the vehicle away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Bridgend forecourt you're on, the Morrisons included.

At home, the car remains just as it was left.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to treat the gases.

Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Gibshill overnight and has not been started since. The AdBlue sits at the base of the tank, undrawn — but it would be the first thing through if the motor runs, before any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of damage from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that crystallises in filters and narrow channels; and, since it attacks some metals, every part it touches suffers for as long as it remains inside.

Pipes holding AdBlue mean damage overnight for a car parked around Bridgend. Just in the tank, it stays stable.

The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on BP's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that's the whole issue.

No harm is done while it sits put, blended into the diesel — only once your engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

It doesn't burn, and so it can't just be run through.

Crystals and corrosion remain after the next tankful, and AdBlue separates again from the diesel, and so watering it won't work. Hence the flush counts more, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Maukinhill or the heart of Bridgend alike.

As with petrol, there's good news.

If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and your tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Inverclyde your car is sitting.

## Bridgend: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of vehicles put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, occasionally behind a single flap, and in dim light the two can appear the same. Nobody intends it.

It mostly happens outside the house, from a container grabbed en route home, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the refill is hurried.

Near Brown Street, a driver pours a bottle in at home in the evening.

Another version: darkness, the car park outside Tail O' The Bank, and a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It occurs most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

An identical slip, same first step — leave it switched off — anywhere you happen to be in Bridgend or the rest of Inverclyde.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Bridgend?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Via the filter, along the pipework, and — with any running — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is where it has gone.

Expect rough running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on your dash, or a stall — returning from Grass Walkway, perhaps, or part way across Bridgend.

Once safe, pull over then switch everything off — without turning it on again to test.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M8, under 10 miles from Bridgend, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Distance matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system, and so driving for Glasgow, under 25 miles away, makes a much bigger job than hopping across Bridgend to the car park by Cappielow Park.

Let us know about how far it had come.

There's more to rinse out once your engine has been run, and our engineers do all of it where the vehicle has stopped.

When it's caught quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Bridgend?

Anywhere it has come to rest around Bridgend — a forecourt, a layby, a drive, a road by Crawfurdsburn Community Centre — our van comes to the vehicle.

Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if your motor has been run, because those replies decide this work.

Right there, the tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one.

The system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

A test of your car comes at the end, once clean diesel goes in and the filter gets flushed or, if needed, replaced.

About half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when the engine hasn't run.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to bleed your system on clean diesel.

You set off as soon as our technicians have started the car, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway in Bridgend or in a space outside Cartsdyke.

It is tested on new diesel to be sure it runs properly before our technicians head off.

We do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never needs to go to a workshop.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

If you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of assuming.

A van that comes to you fits Bridgend, a residential suburb: there's no need to bring the vehicle to us, because we empty it there, in a drive, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Bridgend: the cost of fixing it

Since the jobs vary, a single price would not be honest.

What moves the price is, firstly, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and finally where the car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Aspiration.

Ahead of a figure, never afterwards, every enquiry from Bridgend opens with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, plus if it ran.

Those answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Our price is given during the call, before anyone sets off; payment comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
