# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Brighton and Hove: Why It Occurs

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside a moment, keep your ignition and motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Around Brighton and Hove, finding it before the engine turns usually leaves a drain and a full flush on the spot.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page covers the why it takes place and the ways to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels around Kemp Town, like those in Brighton and Hove, carry on two liquids; the engine gets just your diesel.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there spraying treats the gas.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Brighton and Hove

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

On a drive off Queen's Road before work, or in the car park outside The Quadrant heading home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and once it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Unfamiliar cars are next, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Brighton and Hove or out in Brighton.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a Brighton and Hove forecourt or a drive over in Hove, take a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Check for it.

- The handbook shows where it lives if the filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Brighton.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around East Sussex that is.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, motor stopped, and not in a rush by West Street at the roadside.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — once you've located the filler and read it.

- Both behind one flap? Then make sure the cap on the diesel filler stays closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Step five stays off limits.

## Brighton and Hove: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the Esso, ask the staff to help push the car away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Brighton and Hove.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

## When our engineers arrive around Brighton and Hove, what occurs?

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Paul's CofE Primary School, near Jubilee Clock Tower or on your own drive.

What fluid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask because those replies set both work and price.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing clears away on its own, no matter how long it sits.

Testing is at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

After that our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before leaving.

Unrun cars mostly mean a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

It's worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
