# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Brighton Hill: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, carried out right where the vehicle stands in Brighton Hill, is usually all it takes when found before your motor runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Many newer diesels around South Ham, like those in Brighton Hill, run on two liquids; the engine takes just the diesel.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Brighton Hill: how it occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Brighton Way before work, or in the car park outside Portsmouth Arms on the way home.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and after the pour begins, nothing halts it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Brighton Hill or out in Cliddesden.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these first, on a forecourt in Brighton Hill or a driveway out in Kempshott. A few seconds, no more.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Basingstoke.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Anywhere in Hampshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Haydn Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, but it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Never go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Brighton Hill already?

Do not start the motor: that's how the short order of things starts.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

The attendants at Shell, Sainsbury's or any forecourt will normally lend a hand to push the car away when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Brighton Hill.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next junction means where to come off if you are on the M3, under a mile from Brighton Hill.

Mileage counts — a short hop across Brighton Hill makes a smaller job than heading under 25 miles towards Winchester — so say about how far it went.

## Brighton Hill: what happens when our engineers get there

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Manor Field Junior School, close to Brighton Hill Community Association or on your own drive.

Which liquid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask since those answers decide both work and price.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody heads out.

Emptying the tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running properly.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine has not run need roughly half an hour once our engineers are there.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

## Brighton Hill and Hampshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Brighton Hill is a residential suburb, and the vans that cover it also work the places around it, Viables and Hatch Warren among them, across the RG postcode area.

Our van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting RG22 4.

No need to shift the car.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to The Church Of Christ The King, a lay-by on the way to Brighton Hill Park, a driveway.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of The Dome.

## In short, for Brighton Hill people

Before you tip, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless, leave it off then ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it sits, anywhere across Hampshire.
