# Briston: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Stop reading for a moment if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, done right where the vehicle sits in Briston, is normally what it needs when found before the motor runs.

Reading in advance? Then the rest covers why it happens and what to prevent it ever happening.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of current diesels on the roads about Briston and Burgh Stubbs carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where a spray cleans the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two side by side under one flap.

Diesel goes in on each filling station visit, again and again.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

It is in the gap that the mistake happens.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Briston

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and running out means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off The Lane, or outside The Three Horseshoes on the way home that evening.

Then, the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Whether it takes place in Melton Constable or the middle of Briston, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Hunworth or a forecourt around Briston, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- The size. On plenty of motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside the diesel filler? In that case look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook says where.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at Sheringham? Check with the person who drove the car last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Norfolk that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Old Post Road.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have located the filler and read the cap.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never carry on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Briston?

Brief order, then. Top of that: your engine stays off.

Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

The staff at the nearest petrol station, bp or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the vehicle away if asked.

If you are on your own driveway in Briston, leave the car where it sits.

When the motor has run by now, stop somewhere safe then switch the car off.

Briston sits over 50 miles from the M11; there, use the first junction.

Distance counts — a short hop across Briston is a smaller job than heading under 25 miles to Norwich — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What takes place when our engineers get there around Briston

Our van comes to the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside The Salvation Army - Briston, or by Astley Primary School.

We ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run, because those replies settle the work and the quote.

During the phone call itself, you hear the price — before anything else.

Draining that tank comes next, then a full flush of the fuel system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of it clears out unaided. Hence it counts more.

Testing is at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced if necessary.

Before we go, our engineers fire it up and make sure that it is running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once our engineers get there, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
