# Britwell: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause reading for a moment if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your motor hasn't turned, it is drained and thoroughly purged where the vehicle is in Britwell.

Here before the event? Then the rest covers why it happens and how to prevent it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Diesel goes to the motor — but plenty of modern diesels driven around Britwell and Cippenham carry a second liquid as well.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there spraying cleans the fumes.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump happens all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

It is in that gap that the mistake lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank happen in Britwell?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Haste follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Long Furlong Drive, or heading home in the car park at The Duke's Head.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Whether it takes place in Farnham Royal or the middle of Britwell, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Britwell forecourt or a driveway over in Lent Rise, spend a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- On many vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Burnham.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

The day the light comes on, wherever in Berkshire, use this routine.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush beside Calbroke Road at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then look again — making sure the diesel filler remained closed throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Britwell?

Short list, then. Top of that: the engine remains unstarted.

Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Diluting it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of blending — and that is where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help roll your car away from the petrol pump if you're on a forecourt — the Shell, the Texaco or somewhere else.

Your own driveway in Britwell is the place it stays.

Already run? Pull over once it is safe, then switch off.

On the Huntercombe Spur, under 3 miles from Britwell, that means the next exit.

Mileage counts — a quick hop across Britwell is a smaller job than driving under 25 miles to St Albans — so tell us about how far it went.

## What takes place when we arrive in Britwell

Anywhere your car has stopped, be it outside Lynch Hill School Primary Academy, beside St. George's Church or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

Which liquid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask since the replies decide the work and quote.

On the call itself, you are told our price — before anything else.

Then your tank is emptied and your system rinsed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we go, we fire it up and check that it's running correctly.

Unstarted vehicles usually need a half-hour visit from arrival. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

## Britwell and Berkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Britwell is a residential suburb, and our vans that cover it also work the places around it, Burnham and East Burnham among them, across the SL postcode area.

Our van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting SL2 2.

Shifting the car is not needed.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Kennedy Park Recreation Ground, a side street close to British Parish Community Centre: our engineers drain it where it is.

If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of The Britwell Centre, ring and ask rather than guessing.
