# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Broadsands? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, keep the engine off and leave the ignition off.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the system pulls it in.

Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Broadsands.

First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Broadsands: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.

- If you are at all close to moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- Keep the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and about how much.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting TQ4 6, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- Do not start the motor, even for a moment to move the vehicle.

- The ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run your pump.

- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue won't blend, and so it's pointless.

- Even a short distance up Sycamore Close is too far to drive the car.

- Don't try to drain it yourself by the kerbside.

The attendants working at any Broadsands filling station — the Harvest Energy included — will normally help pushing it clear if you ask.

At your own driveway, don't move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor.

From a separate reservoir it is fed straight to the exhaust, cleaning what your engine emits.

A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, will not. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

A motor topped up on a drive in Waddeton yesterday evening and not started since counts as the straightforward one. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up yet — but when your motor runs, that's what goes first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

From there it causes two kinds of harm.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow passages; and, since it attacks some metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains in there.

A car left standing in Broadsands with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel running through them, so the water content damages them by itself.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger issue?

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the Sainsbury's, and the issue is diluted fuel.

Blended through the diesel and sitting unused, it's no threat at that stage; using the engine does the harm.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is plainly the wrong one.

Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

Crystals and corrosion stay through the next fill, and AdBlue splits again from your diesel, so watering it won't work. That is why the flush counts so much, and turning your key "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other mistake — in Brixham or the heart of Broadsands equally.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Devon your car is sitting.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Broadsands: how it ends up there

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, occasionally under one flap — may appear the same. Nobody intends it; many designs allow it.

Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

Usually, it happens in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Galmpton Church of England Primary School the top-up is hurried.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Lower Fowden.

Otherwise, in dim light outside The Railway Inn, your car gets topped up by someone opening that flap the first time.

Rented motors, new cars, company cars, or the spare car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles see it most.

Wherever you're around Broadsands or the rest of Devon, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Broadsands?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, after passing through the fuel filter and lines.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each might appear, perhaps part way across Broadsands or returning from Torbay Golf Centre Pitch & Putt.

No restarting to check: stop when safe, then turn it off.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Leave the M5, under 25 miles from Broadsands, at the next junction and park somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

Distance matters: each mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system, so driving for Exeter, under 25 miles away, gives a far bigger job than crossing Broadsands to the car park by Churston Library.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to rinse out once the motor has been started, and our engineers do all of it where your car has ended up.

If it is noticed early, permanent damage is very rare.

## Broadsands: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Broadsands: a side street close to Bath House, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three replies shape the work, and so first we ask which fluid got in, about the amount, and whether your motor has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together after your tank is drained, on the spot.

Your system is flushed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Engine not run? Then expect about half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that's the final step.

Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where the car is parked, at Paignton or on a drive in Broadsands.

Before leaving, we check it's running correctly with fresh diesel in.

Since the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a workshop never comes into it.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

## About Broadsands and where it is

Broadsands is a coastal suburban area in Devon, situated near the towns of Churston Ferrers and Galmpton. Broadsands lies at a low elevation of around 5 metres, close to the sea and near the popular beach at Goodrington. Broadsands is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its residential nature. Broadsands is located approximately 22 miles from Exeter and 167 miles from London.

## AdBlue drains across Broadsands and Devon

Our vans that answer AdBlue calls in Broadsands also cover the places about it, Churston Ferrers, Galmpton and Goodrington among them, and most of Devon beyond, across the TQ postcode area.

Phone and ask rather than guess if you are close to a border, or anywhere awkward to explain.

Broadsands is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## Broadsands: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There's no honest single quote, because the jobs are not the same.

Three things shift the cost: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind Churston Car Boot Sale.

What was put in, how much, and whether the engine ran: every Broadsands call opens with precisely that, ahead of any quote, never afterwards.

Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Before anyone heads out, you hear the price on the phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

While our engineer is travelling, dig out your policy: many include misfuelling.

## Still beside your car around Broadsands?

Not touching your car is, right now, the best thing open to you.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us it's AdBlue, about how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Broadsands or anywhere around Devon.
