# Broadwell: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Broadwell.

The remainder of this page covers why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Not one fluid but two: that's how many newer diesels near Broadwell and Poolway run, with diesel for your motor.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

There is a filler for every tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many cars. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in the gap that the slip happens.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Broadwell: how it happens

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from your car, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Poolway Road, or outside The Dog House on the way home after work.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — yet a hire car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: an unfamiliar car.

Nothing stops the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Bakers Hill or the heart of Broadwell: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Palmers Flat or a forecourt in Broadwell, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- On plenty of vehicles, size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of motors mark which goes in which inlet just there.

- The handbook shows where it is if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Lydney, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Anywhere around Gloucestershire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Speech House Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- Both behind one flap? So confirm the lid on your diesel side stays closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Shut the cap, and check again — making sure the diesel filler remained closed the whole time. After that, start the car.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Stage five is out.

## Broadwell: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition goes on — so keep it off.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of that tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Texaco or the Central Garage, ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump.

On your own drive in Broadwell? Then your car remains put.

Where your engine has run already, stop somewhere safe and switch it off.

Leave the M50 — under 10 miles out of Broadwell — at the first junction.

A short hop across Broadwell is a smaller job than a run towards Gloucester, under 25 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival around Broadwell, and what occurs next

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Coalway Primary School, near Broadwell Memorial or on your own driveway.

The replies decide the work and the price, and so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run.

During the phone call itself, you hear the price — before dispatch.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of your system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol.

Once your filter is flushed — or replaced, if needed — clean diesel goes in, and then the vehicle gets tested.

Your engine is fired up next and checked to make sure it runs properly, all before our engineers head off.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Broadwell drivers: the short version

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave the vehicle off then call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it waits, anywhere in Gloucestershire.
