# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Brochroy

Leave the motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before your motor runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Brochroy.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads about Brochroy and Airds Bay carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think which filler to use.

It is in the gap that the mistake lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Brochroy: how it occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

On a driveway off Brochroy Croft before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village heading home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car tells you, and once it is gone, limp mode follows.

New-to-you motors are second, too. Hire cars, new cars and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

Nothing halts the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's seconds, be it in Achlonan or right in the centre of Brochroy.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Ichrachan or a forecourt in Brochroy, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Many motors give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it lives if the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Taynuilt.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere across Argyll and Bute the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Lochandhu Road.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — after you've found the filler and read the cap.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Brochroy already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the BP or the another forecourt nearby, ask the staff to help push the car away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Brochroy.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next exit means where to leave if you are on the M8, under 50 miles from Brochroy.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Brochroy is less work than a trip of over 50 miles towards Stirling, so say.

## Brochroy: what occurs when we get there

By the local primary school, close to Church of the Visitation or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

What fluid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask because those replies set the work and price.

On the call itself, you are told our quote — ahead of anything else.

Draining that tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

The engine is fired up next and checked to be sure it runs correctly, all before we head off.

Unstarted vehicles mostly mean a half-hour visit from arrival. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.
