# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Brockham: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside a moment, leave your ignition and engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your motor has not turned, it is drained and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle sits around Brockham.

Reading before the event? Then the rest covers why it happens and how to prevent it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many newer diesels in Brockham Park, as well as Brockham, carry on two fluids; your motor takes just the diesel.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

It is in the gap that the slip happens.

## Brockham: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste follows from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Brockham Lane, or heading home in the car park at The Royal Oak.

New-to-you vehicles come next, as well. Hire cars, new cars and company cars put their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, keeps on.

Whether it occurs in Strood Green or the middle of Brockham, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Brockham forecourt or a driveway over in Gadbrook, spend a few seconds over these before any goes in.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it beside your diesel filler? Then look below the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Betchworth.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Anywhere around Surrey the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Brockham Green.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then look once more — making sure your diesel cap remained closed the whole time. After that, start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Stage five stays out.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Brockham?

Short order, then. First: the engine stays unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, right where fuel is taken from.

The staff at Shell, Esso or another forecourt will normally help pushing your car away when you ask.

On your own drive in Brockham? So the vehicle stays put.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

Come off the M25 — under 3 miles out of Brockham — at the first exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Brockham is less work than a run of under 25 miles to Westminster, so say.

## Our arrival around Brockham, and what happens next

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, whether outside North Downs Primary School, beside Brockham Village Hall or at home, the van comes to it.

Which liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask because the answers set both work and quote.

The price is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

Then the tank is drained and the system cleaned thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more here than with petrol.

The filter flushed or, where it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of your car.

We don't leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor hasn't run need about half an hour after our engineers are there.

Your insurer usually wants an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to look at yours.
