# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Brookroyd? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave your motor off then keep your ignition off.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

As it is water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble just comes once your pump begins pulling it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Brookroyd, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before your engine has run.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Brookroyd: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.

- Close to moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, and so don't bin it out.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting WF17 0, or the name of the nearest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Don't:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll your car: the motor stays off.

- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to start your pump.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, so it's pointless.

- Don't drive the car anywhere, not even a short distance down Lea View.

- By the road, do not attempt draining it yourself.

The attendants on duty at any Brookroyd filling station — the Texaco included — will usually help pushing it aside if you ask.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays exactly where it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the engine.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

Not one side suits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and a pump can't deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

It sinks, because it is heavier than diesel, and pools low where the intake draws its supply from.

Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Brownhill End last night and hasn't been started since. The liquid waits at the base of the tank, undrawn — though it would be first through if the motor starts, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

It eats at certain metals used in fuel components, attacking any part it touches till it's removed from the system. And once the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in narrow passages.

A motor left sitting around Brookroyd with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Then there's the water: it offers no protection to the components that need it most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more major than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on another forecourt nearby's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that is the main fault.

No harm comes as long as it stays unused, mixed into your diesel — only when your motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

Nor can it be watered down, because it splits back out — and the next tankful will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Brookroyd or out in Copley Hill, costs more than almost any other error.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Anywhere around West Yorkshire your car has stopped, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue yet inside the tank: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.

## Brookroyd: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Plenty of vehicles put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap, and after dark the two may appear identical. Nobody means it.

Mostly it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the pump.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

The refill gets hurried outside Birstall Primary Academy, because your dash flashed with a warning as the kids were taken in.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Brookroyd Lane.

Or a driver new to that flap refills your car in dim light, parked in the car park outside The Greyhound.

The least familiar cars see it most — rentals, brand-new cars, company cars, and the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels.

Leave it off: that is the first response to an identical mistake, anywhere in Brookroyd or the remainder of West Yorkshire you are.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Brookroyd?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

Your filter and lines have had it sucked along, and some running carries it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Perhaps returning from Little Wood, or midway across Brookroyd, your motor may run rough, smoke, drop pace, light up the dash or stall.

No starting it again to test: stop when safe, then turn it off.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

Brookroyd sits under 3 miles from the M62; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and stop safely instead of carrying on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Brookroyd to the car park by St Saviour is a very different job from a run towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Our technicians do all of the rinsing where the vehicle has stopped, and once the motor has been started there is more of it.

Very seldom does it leave permanent damage if it is spotted quickly.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel in Brookroyd: what it takes

Anywhere it has come to rest around Brookroyd — a filling station, a layby, a drive, a street beside Birstall Community Church — our van comes to the car.

The job depends on three answers, and our technicians get first — which fluid got in, the quantity, and if your motor has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one when your tank is drained, right there.

Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Clean diesel goes in once the filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that your vehicle is tested.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

The final step is to prime the fuel system on clean diesel.

You head off as soon as our engineers have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive around Brookroyd or in a space at Batley.

Before leaving, our engineers confirm it is running properly with clean diesel in.

Since the job is done in full where the car is, a garage never comes into it.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

## About Brookroyd and where it is

Brookroyd is a suburban area in West Yorkshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 93 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Brookroyd lies approximately 6 miles from Bradford and is part of the larger urban area surrounding the city. Brookroyd is close to nearby places such as Brown Hill, Nook, and Birstall Smithies, and is located about 166 miles north of London. Brookroyd has a population of around 5117 residents.

## AdBlue drains across Brookroyd and West Yorkshire

AdBlue call-outs around Brookroyd are passed to vans that cover the towns near it — Brown Hill, Nook plus Birstall Smithies — and much of West Yorkshire further out, across WF postcodes.

Ring and ask rather than guess if you are close to a border, or somewhere awkward to pin down.

No towing is needed. In Brookroyd, a residential suburb, a mobile service fits: the car is emptied on the spot, whether in a driveway, a residential street, a parking area or a filling station.

## Brookroyd: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No flat price would be honest, because every job is different.

Three things shift the cost: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether a van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight spot behind Birstall Methodist Church.

That's why each call from Brookroyd starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run.

Those replies narrow a range right down to a single number.

You hear that price on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Look at your policy while we're on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

## Brookroyd: still next to your car?

Not touching the car is, then, the best move open to you.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, and if the engine ran is all our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest throughout West Yorkshire, Brookroyd included.
