# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Broomhaugh: Why It Occurs

Pause reading for a moment when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, done just where the car sits in Broomhaugh, is usually all it takes when caught before the engine runs.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

No single fluid but two: that is what plenty of modern diesels around Broomhaugh and Broomley carry, with diesel feeding your motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Broomhaugh: how it takes place

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things lining up together.

On a drive off Mill Grange before work, or in the car park at The Wellington heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, once begun, keeps on.

It takes seconds, be it in Riding Mill or bang in the heart of Broomhaugh.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Bywell or a forecourt around Broomhaugh, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- On many vehicles, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Riding Mill.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

On the day the warning comes on — anywhere you are around Northumberland — a routine to follow.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of A695.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Finish once that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, pour gently using its built-in spout.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Stage five stays off limits.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Broomhaugh?

Do not start your motor: that's where the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment the ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the Esso, ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the pump.

Your own drive around Broomhaugh is where it should stay.

Where your engine has been run already, stop safely then turn the vehicle off.

Broomhaugh sits under 15 miles from the Central Motorway East; there, use the next exit.

About how far did it go? Crossing Broomhaugh is less a job than a trip of under 15 miles to Newcastle upon Tyne, and so tell us.

## When our technicians get there around Broomhaugh, what occurs?

The van comes to the vehicle anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, beside Millennium Hall, or outside Broomhaugh (VA) Church of England First School.

Which liquid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask because the replies set both work and quote.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anybody heads out.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. That is why it counts more.

Filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a check of the vehicle.

Before we go, we start the engine and check that it's running correctly.

Unstarted vehicles mostly need a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The kit is safe on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
