# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Broomholm? Keep It Switched Off

Engine off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

The trouble starts once it's sucked through your pump — it won't ignite, and it will not blend with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Broomholm, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your motor has been run.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Broomholm

Things to do:

- So no one can switch your ignition on, take your keys out.

- Put your hazards on if you're at all close to moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the product and the quantity, and so do not bin it out.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting NR12 0, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- Shifting the car even a short way is no reason to start your engine.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- No more fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, so it's pointless.

- Leave the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch along Abbey Street.

- Draining that tank yourself by the road is not one to try.

The staff on duty at any Broomholm filling station — the Sainsbury's among them — will usually help rolling it aside if you ask.

At your own drive, do not touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not the motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the very spot the pickup sucks from.

A motor topped up on a drive in Walcott yesterday evening and left unstarted counts as the straightforward one. No pump has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but when your engine turns, that's what goes first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny passages and clog filters. Worse, it eats at some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it's cleared out.

Pipes holding AdBlue mean harm by morning for a car parked in Broomholm. Just inside the tank, it stays the same.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel running through them, so the water content harms them by itself.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

A problem of thinned fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol at the another forecourt nearby.

Mixed through the diesel and left still, it is harmless for now; running your engine is the damage.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is simply the wrong one.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Witton Bridge or the middle of Broomholm.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Wherever in Norfolk the vehicle has come to rest, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue still inside the tank: the easiest part of any fuel system to empty.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Broomholm

It's not on purpose. Many vehicles have the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, now and then behind one flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light.

A container picked up when heading home and tipped in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the usual route.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Bacton Primary School the top-up is hurried.

Near Walcott Road, a driver pours a bottle in at home in the evening.

Otherwise, after dark outside Poachers Pocket, the car gets topped up by someone opening that flap for the first time.

It crops up most in a rental, a new motor, a fleet car, or the spare vehicle of a family with both fuel types — the vehicles people use the least.

Same slip, an identical first step — leave it off — wherever you are around Broomholm or the remainder of Norfolk.

## Broomholm: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

With any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, having passed via your filter and lines.

Perhaps returning from Cubitt Memorial Playing Field, or midway across Broomholm, your motor may go lumpy, smoke, lose power, light up your dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the M11, over 50 miles from Broomholm, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Distance counts: each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in, so driving for Norwich, under 25 miles away, makes a much bigger job than hopping across Broomholm to the car park by Bacton Bromholm & Keswick Village Sign.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the flushing where the vehicle has stopped, and once your engine has been started there is more of it.

Permanent damage is very uncommon if it is spotted quickly.

## Broomholm: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A road by Beacon Community Church, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt: wherever your car has come to rest around Broomholm, we come to it.

Three replies decide the work, so first we ask which fluid went in, roughly what quantity, and whether your engine has run.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out as one after the tank is drained, right there.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing counts: the whole system is flushed all the way through because what remains will not wash away by itself.

Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, if it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested.

Roughly half an hour once we arrive is typical for most jobs when your engine hasn't run.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that's the final step.

Then our engineers fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking space by North Walsham or a driveway in Broomholm.

It is tested on new diesel to confirm it runs properly before we head off.

No workshop is required at any stage, with the whole job done then and there.

Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

## Broomholm and Norfolk: AdBlue drains across the area

Our vans that answer AdBlue calls around Broomholm also cover the spots about it, Bacton, Keswick and Pollard Street among them, and most of Norfolk beyond, across the NR postcode area.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of assuming.

No moving is needed. In Broomholm, a coastal village, a van that comes to you fits: your vehicle is emptied where it stands, be it on a driveway, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## Broomholm: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Every job is different, and so not one single price is fair.

What shifts the price is, firstly, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight space behind Bacton Village Hall.

What went in, how much, and if it ran: every Broomholm call begins by asking precisely those, ahead of any quote, not after.

The replies turn a range into a straight price.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.

## Still next to the car around Broomholm?

Right now, the best thing to do with your vehicle is to not touch it.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it's AdBlue, about how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Broomholm or anywhere in Norfolk.
