# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Brow Edge

Keep the engine and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Usually, if your motor has not run, it's drained and fully cleaned where the vehicle is around Brow Edge.

The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Not one liquid but two: that's how many modern diesels around Brow Edge and Newby Bridge run, with diesel for your engine.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

Far less regularly, the AdBlue side is topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between them.

## Brow Edge: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off A590 before work, or in the car park at The Anglers Arms on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and once it is empty, limp mode follows.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as readily, and after the pour begins, nothing halts it.

Backbarrow or the middle of Brow Edge: it is the same few seconds in both.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Brow Edge forecourt or a driveway out in Seatle, take a couple of seconds on these before anything goes in.

- Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- Many motors give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Open the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of cars show which goes in each filler right there.

- Can't find it beside the diesel filler? In that case look below the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual will say where.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Cark.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Cumbria that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Brow Edge Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, but it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Skip step five altogether.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Brow Edge already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your motor.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the vehicle on.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the base rather than blending — and that's where your fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help roll your car away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Esso, the BP or anywhere else.

Your own driveway around Brow Edge is the place it stays.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Leave the M6 — under 15 miles out of Brow Edge — at the next exit.

Distance matters — a short hop across Brow Edge makes a smaller job than driving under 25 miles towards Lancaster — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When we get there in Brow Edge, what takes place?

Our van comes to the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Cascades Health & Fitness Club, or by Leven Valley CofE Primary School.

Both the work and the quote rest on three replies — what fluid, what amount, and whether it's run — so we ask.

That price comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

Testing is last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

Before we leave, our engineers start the car and confirm that it is running smoothly.

If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
