# Buckland End: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Stop here a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Buckland End.

Here before the event? In that case what follows covers why it comes about and what to prevent it happening at all.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Many newer diesels on the roads about Buckland End and Shard End carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is topped up at the pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less commonly.

That gap is where the error lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Buckland End: how it takes place

Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things coming up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Buckland End before work, or in the car park outside The Kingfisher on the way home.

New-to-you vehicles are second, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Colehall or the middle of Buckland End: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Stechford or a forecourt around Buckland End, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of cars, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.

- Cannot see it beside the diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook says where.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Stechford.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

On the day the light comes on — wherever you are around West Midlands — a routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Hartshill Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, but it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Buckland End already?

Do not start your engine: that's where the short order of things begins.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the bottom rather than mixing — and that's where the fuel is pulled from.

The attendants at BP, Jet or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the vehicle away if asked.

At home around Buckland End? So your car stays where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M6, under a mile from Buckland End, that means the next junction.

Distance matters — a short hop across Buckland End makes a smaller job than driving under 5 miles to Birmingham — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Buckland End: what takes place when our engineers arrive

Wherever the vehicle came to rest, whether outside Heathlands Primary Academy, near Castle Bromwich Methodist Church or at home, the van comes to it.

What liquid went in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask because those answers set both work and quote.

You hear that price on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Draining your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the fuel system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and nothing washes out on its own, no matter how long it sits.

A test is at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the fuel filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

Before we go, our technicians start it and check that it is running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour once we get there, as long as your motor has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.

The car does not need to move.

Anywhere it sits — beside Hodge Hill United Reform Church, on a layby heading to West Avenue, on a drive — that is where it is emptied.

Assuming won't help at the back of Castle Bromwich Hall, on a border, or anywhere hard to describe; ring and check.

## For Buckland End motorists, the short version

Always, the cap; after that, the tip.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere in West Midlands, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — so leave the vehicle off then call 0333 366 0103.
