# Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Buckskin

Stop reading for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor hasn't turned, it's emptied and fully flushed where your car sits around Buckskin.

Reading in advance? In that case the rest explains why it happens and how to prevent it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels around Winklebury, as well as Buckskin, carry on two liquids; the motor takes only the diesel.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there spraying cleans the fumes.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the layout on a lot of motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

Seldom filled, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think which cap to use.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Buckskin?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Pennine Way before work, or in the car park at The Buckskin on the way home.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's the second thing: a new vehicle.

Lastly, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as easily, and after the tip begins, no part stops it.

Worting or the heart of Buckskin: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Kempshott or a forecourt around Buckskin, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Basingstoke, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Anywhere in Hampshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, engine off, and not in a rush by Exmoor Close at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, close the cap and look again that your diesel cap never opened off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is off limits.

## Buckskin: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The short order of things, starting with not starting the motor.

Leave the ignition off as well, since on many diesels switching it on alone starts the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Shell, Texaco or any forecourt will normally help pushing your car clear if asked.

If you're on your own driveway around Buckskin, leave the vehicle where it sits.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Leave the M3 — under 3 miles out of Buckskin — at the first exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Buckskin is less a job than a run of under 25 miles towards Winchester, and so say.

## Buckskin: what occurs when our engineers get there

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Chiltern Primary School, near Buckskin Evangelical Church or on your own driveway.

The answers decide the work and our quote, so we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

That price comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, after the tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

A test comes last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

Before leaving, our engineers fire it up and confirm that it's running properly.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains around Buckskin and across Hampshire

Throughout RG postcodes, our vans that cover Buckskin — a residential suburb — work the surrounding spots too, South Ham and West Ham included.

Give a postcode that starts RG22 5, and the van gets there fastest.

Your car does not need to move.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Kempshott Village Hall, a lay-by on the way to Stratton Park, a drive.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of South Ham Library.
