# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Bughtlin? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and the ignition as well.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

Being water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage only comes once your pump begins drawing it.

Caught before your motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Bughtlin.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Your next steps right now, Bughtlin: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do:

- So no one can turn your ignition on, take your keys out.

- Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.

- Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and about how much.

- Ring just where you are. Quote a EH12 8 postcode or the closest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

- Do not start the engine, even for a moment to shift your car.

- Your ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run your pump.

- Adding more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of blending.

- Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance along Maybury Drive.

- No emptying it yourself, either, on the verge.

Rolling your vehicle off the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Bughtlin forecourt you're on, the Shell or any other.

At home, the car stays just as it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, and there it treats the gas.

Not one side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump cannot take urea.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays apart rather than mixing — entirely unlike fuel.

It sinks, since it's heavier than diesel, and settles low where the pickup draws its fuel from.

When the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Until then it waits beneath the diesel, which is how a car filled in Cammo last night and not started remains the straightforward one, provided nobody turns your key.

After it's pulled in, the damage comes in two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the parts it reaches for as long as it remains there.

Overnight, a car sitting in Bughtlin with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; if it is just inside the tank, it doesn't.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Tesco's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that is the whole problem.

No damage comes as long as it sits unused, blended into your diesel — only when your motor works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

It cannot just be run through, since it doesn't burn.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Barnton or the middle of Bughtlin.

As with petrol, there's good news.

If your engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in the tank, and your tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across City of Edinburgh the car is standing.

## Bughtlin: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of vehicles sits right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A bottle bought when heading home and poured in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the usual story.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

The refill is rushed outside the local primary school, because the dash lit up with a warning as the kids were taken off.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Bughtlin Park.

Or someone new to that flap tops up the vehicle in dim light, stopped in the car park by Mid Yoken Pub.

Rented cars, new motors, fleet motors, or the spare car in a home with both fuels: the least known vehicles get it most.

Same mistake, an identical first step — keep it off — anywhere you happen to be around Bughtlin or the rest of City of Edinburgh.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Bughtlin?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

The fuel filter and pipework have had it pulled through, and any running carries it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on the dash, or a stall — coming back from Fauldburn Park, perhaps, or part way across Bughtlin.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M8, under 3 miles from Bughtlin, the next junction is where to leave, and somewhere safe is where to park — not carrying on.

Distance counts: each mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system, and so heading for Edinburgh, under 5 miles away, makes a far bigger job than hopping across Bughtlin to the car park by East Craigs Church Centre.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There's more to rinse out once the engine has run, and our technicians do all of it where the car has ended up.

If it's caught early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Bughtlin

Our engineers come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Bughtlin: a side street close to Drumbrae Leisure Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

What went in, about how much, plus whether the engine has turned over: our engineers ask first, since those decide the job.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave together when that tank is drained, on the spot.

The fuel system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Testing the vehicle follows last, after fresh diesel goes in and the filter is flushed or, where necessary, swapped.

Roughly half an hour on site is typical for most jobs where your motor has not run.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming your system with new diesel comes last.

Starting the car comes next, and then you head off from where the vehicle is parked, outside Edinburgh Gateway or on a drive in Bughtlin.

The check before we head off is that it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

As the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a workshop never comes into it.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

Assuming won't help by a border or anywhere tricky to describe; ring and check.

Bughtlin is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it sits, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Bughtlin

Since each callouts vary, a single price would not be honest.

What shifts the price is, first, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and then where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind St Kentigern’s RC Church.

That's why every call from Bughtlin starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run.

Those replies shrink a range right down to one number.

Before anyone sets off, you are told our price by phone. Then you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Check your policy while we are on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.
