# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bulford Camp: Why It Occurs and How to Stop It

Stop here for a moment when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

In Bulford Camp, finding it before your engine turns usually means draining and a thorough flush on the spot.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the why it takes place and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Many modern diesels on the roads round Bulford Camp and Brigmerston carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling your diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place in Bulford Camp?

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things coming up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Canberra Drive before work, or in the car park at the pub in the village on the way home.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old car — because a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as easily, and once the tip starts, nothing halts it.

It takes seconds, be it out in Bulford or right in the centre of Bulford Camp.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt in Bulford Camp or a drive out in Newton Tony. A few seconds, that's all.

- Read the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- Open the filler flap and look for a label — many cars mark what goes in which filler just there.

- The handbook says where it lives if your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Grateley? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the light appears — wherever you are in Wiltshire — a routine to use.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Hubert Hamilton Road.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It seems daft. It works.

- Both under a single flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel side is still shut before raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Stage five stays off limits.

## Bulford Camp: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

The staff at Murco, Asda or another forecourt will usually help to push the car away when asked.

Your own driveway around Bulford Camp is the place it should stay.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next junction is where to leave when you are on the M27, under 25 miles from Bulford Camp.

Distance matters — a short hop across Bulford Camp is a smaller job than heading under 10 miles to Salisbury — so tell us about how far it went.

## Bulford Camp: what happens when we turn up

The van reaches the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Corporals Mess, or by Kiwi Primary School.

The answers decide this work and the price, and so our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody heads out.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, once your tank is drained.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes away by itself. That is why it counts more.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Your engine is started next and checked to confirm it runs properly, all before we go.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once we get there, provided the engine has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no money upfront.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.

Moving the vehicle isn't necessary.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to Retired Tank Monument, a lay-by on the way to Sling Plantation, a drive.

Guessing doesn't help behind Bulford Kiwi, close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe; phone and check.

## For Bulford Camp drivers, the short version

Pour nothing until you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it sits, anywhere across Wiltshire.
