# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bulford: Why It Occurs

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case set this page aside a moment, keep the ignition and motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, done right where the car stands in Bulford, is normally what it takes when caught before the motor runs.

Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the why it happens and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads round Bulford and Hackthorn carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in that gap that the slip lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Bulford: how it occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Salisbury Road, or on the way home in the car park outside The Rose & Crown.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is the second factor: a strange car.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and after the tip starts, no part stops it.

Whether it takes place in Ratfyn or the middle of Bulford, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Check these first, on a forecourt in Bulford or a drive out in Milston. Seconds, no more.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.

- Can't see it next to your diesel inlet? Then check beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Grateley.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the warning comes on — wherever you are across Wiltshire — a simple routine to use.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, motor stopped, and not rushed beside Orchard End on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Discover during the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Bulford already?

Do not start your motor: that's where the short order of things begins.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

The staff at Murco, Esso or another forecourt will normally lend a hand to push the vehicle clear when you ask.

If you're on your own drive in Bulford, leave the car where it sits.

Where your motor has been run already, pull over somewhere safe then switch it off.

On the M27, under 25 miles from Bulford, that means the next exit.

Mileage counts — a short hop across Bulford is a smaller job than heading under 10 miles towards Salisbury — so say about how far it went.

## When our engineers turn up around Bulford, what happens?

Anywhere your car has stopped, whether by Bulford St Leonard's C of E (VA) Primary School, beside St Leonard's or at home, the van travels to it.

Those answers decide the work and the price, so our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

No one sets off before you have heard our quote over the phone.

Then that tank is emptied and the system cleaned thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals form, some metals are attacked, and none of that clears away unaided, however long it sits.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Next our engineers fire it up and check it runs correctly before leaving.

If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It is worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Speak Plantation, a side street near Bulford Henges: we drain it where it stands.

If you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Durrington Swimming and Fitness Centre, ring and ask instead of assuming.
