# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bulk

Engine off, ignition off: that's how you start if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

The harm starts once it is pulled through the lines — it will not burn, and it will not blend with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Bulk, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before the engine has run.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Bulk, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

- Take the keys out, and so nobody switches the ignition on.

- Close to moving traffic? Then put your hazards on.

- So you can tell us which liquid it was and roughly how much, save your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring right where you are. Quote a LA1 1 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Not to do:

- No starting the engine — not briefly, not to reposition your vehicle.

- Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run your fuel pump.

- Adding extra diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Leave it where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Green Street.

- Do not try to drain it yourself by the roadside.

The attendants working at any Bulk filling station — the Esso included — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

At home, the vehicle remains just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

The pickup sucks fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in Moorlands overnight and has not turned since. The liquid waits at the base of the tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through once your engine runs, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the parts it hits for as long as it remains there.

Pipes holding AdBlue mean harm overnight for a vehicle sitting around Bulk. Only inside that tank, it stays the same.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel flowing past them, and so the water part harms them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is frequently worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error at the Shell, and this problem is diluted fuel.

No harm is done while it stays put, blended into the diesel — only when the engine works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Whether the car is in Lancaster or the heart of Bulk, firing it up "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other error, and the flush counts more. Why: it will not stay blended, and so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion survive the following tankful.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Clearing a tank is the simplest job on any fuel system, and with no start-up, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever in Lancashire your car has stopped.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Bulk

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap — can appear the same. Nobody means it; plenty of layouts invite it.

A container bought while driving home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the usual story.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases.

The top-up gets rushed outside Castle View Primary Academy, because the dash flashed with a warning while the children were taken off.

In the evening, a container goes in on a drive near Bulk Road.

Else, in dim light outside Freeholders Arms, your car is refilled by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

It takes place most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever you are in Bulk or the remainder of Lancashire, it's the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Bulk?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

It has been sucked through the fuel filter and your lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

Expect lumpy running, smoke, falling power, warnings on your dash, or a cut-out — returning from Green Ayre, perhaps, or part way across Bulk.

Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Leave the car off instead of restarting it to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Leave the Lune Valley Interchange, under 3 miles from Bulk, by the next junction and stop safely, rather than carrying on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. That's why a hop across Bulk to park beside Kaizen Academy and a drive of under a mile for Lancaster are such separate jobs.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Once the motor has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped.

Permanent damage is very rare if it's spotted soon.

## Emptying AdBlue in a diesel around Bulk: what it takes

A street beside Lancaster Spiritualist Church, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: wherever your vehicle has stopped around Bulk, we come to it.

What was put in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has turned over: our engineers check before all else, because those decide the work.

Then that tank is drained where your car waits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

What remains from AdBlue won't flush away unaided, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters much more here than with petrol.

After that, the filter: cleaned, or replaced if it has to be. Then fresh diesel, and then a test of your car.

About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when your engine has not run.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming your system with clean diesel comes at the end.

You drive off as soon as our technicians have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive in Bulk or in a bay at Lancaster.

The check before our technicians go is that it runs smoothly on new diesel.

As the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a garage never comes into it.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

## About Bulk

Bulk is a suburban area located on the coast of Lancashire, near the city of Lancaster. Bulk sits at a low elevation of 16 metres, with its terraced housing stock reflecting the area's historical development. Bulk is situated close to other nearby places, including Freehold, Newton, and Ridge, and is approximately 208 miles from London.

## Bulk and Lancashire: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs around Bulk go to teams that serve the towns around it — Freehold, Newton as well as Ridge — and much of Lancashire beyond, throughout LA postcodes.

Near a boundary, or somewhere tricky to explain? Checking beats assuming, and so phone.

Wherever your car stands — your drive at home, a side street, a parking area, a forecourt — our engineers drain it on the spot, with no need to take it to us; that suits Bulk, a residential suburb, well.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Bulk?

Every job differs, so no fixed price would be fair.

What moves the cost is, first, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where the car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind King's Community Church.

Ahead of any figure, never afterwards, each enquiry from Bulk begins with the same three questions: the liquid, the amount, and if it ran.

Those replies turn a range into a straight price.

Quoted on the call before the van sets out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

Look at your insurance whilst we're on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

## Beside the car around Bulk, still?

Then, the best thing to do with the vehicle is to leave it.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Tell us it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and if it ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel takes over, across Bulk or wherever in Lancashire.
