# Bulphan: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Pause here a minute when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your motor hasn't turned, it's emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the car sits around Bulphan.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

No single fluid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels near Bulphan and Orsett carry, with diesel feeding the motor.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray treats the gas.

There is a filler on every tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

Mistakes happen in the gap between them.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs around Bulphan

Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things coming up at once.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Church Lane, or heading home in the car park outside Ye Olde Plough House.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as readily, and once the pour begins, nothing halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Bulphan or out in West Horndon.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt in Bulphan or a driveway out in Great Berry. A few seconds, no more.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Lift the flap and look for a label — plenty of cars show which goes in which filler just there.

- Cannot find it next to your diesel inlet? Then look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook says where.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside West Horndon.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Essex that is.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, engine off, and not rushed by Fen Lane on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Stop when that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently using its built-in spout.

- Before you start your car, close the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Discover at the second or third stage that the bottle went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Never go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Bulphan?

Do not start your motor: that is where the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the staff to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Tesco, the Total or somewhere else.

At home in Bulphan? Then your car stays where it is.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M25, under 5 miles from Bulphan, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Bulphan is a smaller job than a run towards Chelmsford, under 15 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## Bulphan: what occurs when our technicians get there

The van reaches the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own drive, beside St Mary the Vigin, Bulphan, or outside Bulphan Church of England Academy.

Which liquid went in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask because those answers set the work and price.

You get that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, after the tank is cleared.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Once the filter has been flushed — or replaced, if required — clean diesel is added, and then the vehicle gets tested.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running correctly.

If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.
