# Bulwark: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Bulwark, finding it before the motor runs usually leaves a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

Reading in advance? Then the rest explains why it comes about and how to prevent it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds the motor — but many modern diesels seen around Bulwark and Pwllmeyric carry another liquid as well.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there a spray treats the gas.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, the diesel side gets filled constantly.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## Bulwark: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Thornwell Road before work, or in the car park outside Two Brewers heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and if it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is a second thing: a strange motor.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as readily, and after the tip begins, nothing halts it.

Hardwick or the heart of Bulwark: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Merthyr Tewdrig or a forecourt in Bulwark.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.

- Can't see it next to the diesel inlet? Then look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check when you pick up a rental or company car — from Chepstow's car park, perhaps — rather than when the warning comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

For the day the warning comes on — wherever you are in Monmouthshire — a routine to follow.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Mathern Way.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## Bulwark: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

Keep your ignition off as well, because on many diesels it alone runs your fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle away from the pump if you're on a forecourt — the BP, the Tesco or anywhere else.

If you're on your own driveway in Bulwark, leave the car where it is.

Already started? Pull over when it's safe, then switch off.

On the M48, under a mile from Bulwark, that means the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Bulwark is smaller a job than a run of under 15 miles to Bristol, so tell us.

## What occurs when our engineers turn up in Bulwark

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, whether outside Lift Offa's Mead, near Bulwark Community Centre or at home, the van travels to it.

Both the work and the quote depend on three replies — what liquid, which amount, and if it's run — so our engineers ask.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Emptying your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the fuel system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, some metals corrode, and none of it clears away on its own, however long it is left.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after we arrive, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.

## AdBlue drains in Bulwark and across Monmouthshire

Bulwark is a residential suburb, and the vans that cover it also work the places near it, Chepstow and Sedbury among them, across the NP postcode area.

Fastest of all: give a NP16 5 postcode for our van.

The vehicle doesn't need to move.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Bulwarks Prehistoric Enclosure, a side street close to St Mary's: our technicians drain the vehicle where it stands.

If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Palmer Community Centre, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## For Bulwark drivers, the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

AdBlue in the diesel tank after all? Keep the car switched off and phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, across Monmouthshire.
