# Burn Naze: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and your ignition as well.

Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is.

It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the fuel system draws it in.

Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Burn Naze.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Burn Naze: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

- Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- Which fluid, and roughly how much volume? Hang on to the bottle or the receipt, and we can know.

- Call right where you are. Quote a FY5 4 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Never do these:

- Shifting the vehicle even a short way is no reason to start your engine.

- Plenty of diesels power their pump the moment the ignition comes on, so leave it off.

- AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not thin it.

- Keep the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch along Honey Moor Drive.

- By the road, don't attempt draining it on your own.

The staff working at any Burn Naze forecourt — the BP among them — will normally help pushing it aside if you ask.

If you are on your own drive, leave the car just where it stands.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your engine.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, where it cleans the gas.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Tipped in with your diesel, it stays apart instead of blending — quite unlike fuel.

It drops, because it's denser than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its fuel from.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Thornton overnight and has not been started since. The AdBlue sits at the foot of the tank, untouched — though it will be first through once your engine starts, before any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

It attacks some metals found in fuel components, working on whatever it touches till it is removed from the system. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny passages.

A motor left standing around Burn Naze with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel running through them, and so the water content damages them in its own right.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

A fault of thin fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol at the Morrisons.

Damage only comes from running on it. Blended into your diesel and left inside that tank, it does none.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

Crystals and corrosion remain through the following fill, and AdBlue separates back out of your diesel, so watering it won't help. Hence the flush counts more, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm here than almost any other slip — in Raikes or the heart of Burn Naze alike.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Not started? Then the AdBlue waits just in your tank, the easiest section of the entire system to clear, anywhere your vehicle has come to rest around Lancashire.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Burn Naze: how it ends up there

Many vehicles put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel cap, now and then under one flap, and in dim light the two can look the same. Nobody means it.

A container bought while driving home and poured in at home, rather than at the forecourt, is the typical route.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, Thornton Cleveleys the top-up is rushed.

A driver pours the container in at home, right off Fleetwood Road North, as the day ends.

Or the car is topped up in the car park outside Hickorys Smokehouse, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It occurs most in the cars motorists know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever you are in Burn Naze or the remainder of Lancashire, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Burn Naze: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

Given any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and every injector, after passing through the fuel filter and lines.

Lumpy running, smoke, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: each may show up, perhaps midway across Burn Naze or coming back from Fleetwood Town FC Training Grounds.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the M55, under 10 miles from Burn Naze, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to park — not driving on.

Hopping across Burn Naze to the car park by Thornton Cleveleys Football Club is one matter; heading towards Lancaster, under 15 miles away, is another, because every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance matters.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Once your engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where your car has stopped.

If it's caught quickly, long-term damage is very unusual.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Burn Naze?

Our engineers come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Burn Naze: a side street near Sacred Heart, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Which fluid went in, roughly how much, plus if the engine has been run: our engineers check before all else, since those decide the work.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together when the tank is emptied, on the spot.

Residue from AdBlue will not wash away by itself, and so the fuel system gets a full flush, which counts much more with urea than for petrol.

Clean diesel goes in after your filter is cleaned — or swapped, when it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

Bleeding the system with new diesel comes last.

You set off as soon as we have started the car, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway in Burn Naze or in a space outside Poulton-Le-Fylde.

Before we leave, our engineers make sure it is running smoothly with clean diesel in.

Our technicians do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never needs to be taken to a garage.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers ask for.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Burn Naze?

There is no fair single quote, since the jobs are not the same.

Three things change the price: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether a van can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight gap behind Wyre Youth Football Club.

That is why every call from Burn Naze starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it's run.

With those replies, the range narrows to one fixed number.

As the van is on the way, dig out your policy: plenty include misfuelling.
