# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Burnley: How It Happens and How to Prevent It

Stop reading for a moment if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

In Burnley, catching it before your engine runs normally leaves a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many modern diesels on the roads about Burnley and Whittlefield carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some cars keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place both side by side under one flap.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side gets filled all the time.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place around Burnley?

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Elizabeth Street before work, or in the car park outside Big Window on the way home.

Unfamiliar vehicles are second, as well. Hire cars, new motors and company motors place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once begun, carries on.

Whether it happens in Stoneyholme or the middle of Burnley, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Whether a Burnley forecourt or a drive out in Rose Hill, take a couple of seconds over these before any goes in.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.

- Cannot find it next to your diesel inlet? In that case check beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook will say where.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Burnley Manchester Road? Ask the person who drove the car last before you set off, rather than once the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

When the light comes on, anywhere in Lancashire, follow this routine.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Yorke Street.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — after you've found your filler and read the cap.

- The two behind a single flap? Then make sure the cap on the diesel side is still shut before raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the car, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap never opened off.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Burnley?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting the motor.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

The attendants at Tesco, Shell or another forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the vehicle away when asked.

On your own drive in Burnley? So the vehicle remains put.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Burnley lies under a mile from the M65; on it, take the next junction.

Distance counts — a short hop across Burnley is a smaller job than driving under 25 miles to Preston — so say about how far it went.

## When our engineers turn up in Burnley, what takes place?

By Burnley St Peter's Church of England Primary School, near Burnley Mechanics or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Which fluid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask because those answers decide both work and quote.

Nobody heads out before you've heard our quote by phone.

Your system is then purged thoroughly, after the tank is cleared.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, some metals are attacked, and nothing washes out unaided, however long it is left.

Once the fuel filter has been flushed — or renewed, where required — clean diesel is added, and then your vehicle gets tested.

After that we start it and check it runs properly before we go.

Unrun cars mostly mean a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.

## Burnley and Lancashire: AdBlue drains across the area

Burnley is a riverside town, and the teams that cover it also work the places near it, Burnley Wood and Fulledge among them, across the BB postcode area.

Our van gets to you fastest with a postcode starting BB11 1.

Moving the vehicle is not necessary.

The drain takes place right there, whether a driveway, a road near Burnley Town Hall, or a lay-by towards Burnley Wood Park.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of Central Methodist Church? By a county line? Asking is better than assuming, and so phone.

## In short, for Burnley drivers

Always, the cap; after that, the tip.

AdBlue in the diesel tank after all? Leave the vehicle off and call 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, throughout Lancashire.
