# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Burnside: Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the motor hasn't turned, it's drained and thoroughly cleaned where the car sits in Burnside.

Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the reasons it occurs and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many newer diesels in Newbridge, as well as Burnside, carry on two fluids; the motor takes just the diesel.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from a separate tank.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

Plenty of cars have a single flap for both, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at every forecourt visit, again and again.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think what filler it needs.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Burnside

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Burnvale, or on the way home in the car park at Strathbrock Bar.

Unfamiliar vehicles are second, as well. Rentals, new cars and company motors put their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as easily, and once the pour starts, no part halts it.

It's a few seconds, whether out in Broxburn or right in the heart of Burnside.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Winchburgh or a forecourt around Burnside, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it is when your filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Uphall, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Wherever across West Lothian the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Kilpunt Gardens, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park and switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap was never came off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Burnside?

Don't start your engine: that is where the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

At a forecourt — Shell, BP or another — the attendants will usually help roll the vehicle clear, when you ask.

If you are on your own drive around Burnside, leave the vehicle where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

On the M8, under a mile from Burnside, that means the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Dunfermline, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Burnside.

## What takes place when our technicians turn up around Burnside

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, close to Broxburn Parish Church or on your own drive.

What fluid got in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask since those answers set the work and quote.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Then that tank is drained and the system cleaned thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither clears away unaided. Hence it counts more.

After your filter has been cleaned — or replaced, if required — fresh diesel goes in, and finally your car gets tested.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our technicians arrive, provided your engine has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

It's worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

## AdBlue drains in Burnside and across West Lothian

Burnside is a residential suburb, and our teams that cover it also work the places around it, Faucheldean and West Clifton among them, across the EH postcode area.

Quickest of all: give a EH52 5 postcode to our van.

No need to shift the car.

Wherever it sits — near Stewartfield Pavilion, in a lay-by heading to Hillview Place Park, at home — that is where it is drained.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you're near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Xcite Broxburn.

## Burnside motorists: the short version

Pour no AdBlue until you have read the cap.

Even so AdBlue in your diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel will empty it where it stands, wherever in West Lothian: keep it off then ring 0333 366 0103.
