# Burradon: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Stop reading a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the engine has not turned, it is emptied and fully rinsed where your car sits in Burradon.

Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the reasons it happens and the how to prevent it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel feeds your motor — but plenty of newer diesels seen around Burradon and Dudley carry another liquid too.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There's a filler for each tank.

Some motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have the two together behind one flap.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

Much less often, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Burradon: how it happens

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a drive off Weetslade Road before work, or in the car park outside The Camperdown on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and once it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, once started, keeps on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Burradon or out in Camperdown.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Annitsford or a forecourt in Burradon.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- On plenty of vehicles, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: many vehicles have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Seaton Delaval, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Tyne and Wear that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Shillaw Place, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off first.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've found the filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Stop once the tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip slowly using the own spout.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third step that the bottle went into the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Never go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Burradon?

Don't start the motor: that is how the short order of things begins.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Shell or the BP, ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the pump.

Your own driveway in Burradon is where it stays.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Burradon lies under 5 miles from the A167(M); on it, take the next junction.

A short hop across Burradon is a smaller job than a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 5 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when we arrive around Burradon

By Burradon Community Primary School, near Church of the Good Shepherd or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Both the work and our quote rest on three replies — which liquid, which amount, and whether it has run — so we ask.

No one sets off before you've heard our quote over the phone.

Then the tank is drained and the system cleaned thoroughly.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals form, some metals corrode, and nothing clears out unaided, no matter how long it sits.

Filter flushed or, where needed, replaced; clean diesel in; then a check of your car.

Next our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before we leave.

Unrun cars mostly need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway late at night.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

As a residential suburb, Burradon shares its vans surrounding places — Fordley, Killingworth — all the way across NE postcodes and the wider area around them.

The van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting NE23 7.

The vehicle does not need to move.

Anywhere it stands — beside Burradon Tower, in a layby en route to Burradon Recreation Ground, at home — that is where it is cleared.

If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of John Wille Sams Centre, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## In short, for Burradon people

Tip nothing until you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave it off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere around Tyne and Wear.
