# Burridge: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and the ignition too.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

As it is water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage only starts once the pump begins drawing it.

In Burridge, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your engine runs normally comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is.

Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Burridge, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do right away

Things to do:

- Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.

- Close to moving traffic? So put the hazards on.

- Which product, and about what quantity? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and we will see.

- Call just where you are. Say a SO31 1 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to search for you.

Do not do these:

- Moving your car just a few yards is no reason to fire up the motor.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Adding extra diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.

- Leave the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way down Botley Road.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

Moving the car away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Burridge forecourt you are on, the Tesco or any other.

On the drive, your car remains exactly as it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine isn't what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

It does not blend. Once it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel.

Denser than diesel, it drops and pools below it — the very spot the pickup draws from.

Once the pump runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Until then it sits underneath your diesel, and that is how a car filled in Lower Swanwick last night and never switched on remains the simple one, as long as no one touches your key.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps running on the parts it reaches for as long as it remains there.

Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting overnight around Burridge makes it worse. Inside your tank alone, waiting does nothing.

Diesel lubricates the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water offers none of that, which is a second form of damage.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more major than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Esso, and the problem is diluted fuel.

Mixed into your diesel and sitting unused, it's harmless for now; using the engine is the damage.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance.

It can't simply be run through, because it does not burn.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Swanwick or the middle of Burridge.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Wherever around Hampshire the car has come to rest, an unrun engine means the AdBlue still inside the tank: the simplest part of any fuel system to clear.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Burridge?

Plenty of vehicles put the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and in dim light the two may appear the same. No one intends it.

Mostly it's never the filling station: someone picks up a container heading home and tips it in at home.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Whiteley Primary School the refill is hurried.

After work, a bottle is tipped in on a drive close to Fairlawns.

Or a driver new to that flap tops up the car in dim light, stopped in the car park by The Elm Tree.

It comes up the most in a hire car, a new car, a fleet motor, or the other car in a family with one of each fuels — the cars drivers use least.

Wherever you are in Burridge or the rest of Hampshire, it's the same slip and the same first answer: leave it off.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Burridge, and your engine started?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

It's been pulled through the filter and your lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

You may notice your engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Quaveys Copse or halfway across Burridge.

Once safe, stop then switch it off — with no turning it on again to test.

Every start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M27, under a mile from Burridge, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system. That is why crossing Burridge to park beside Burridge Village Hall and a drive of under 10 miles towards Southampton are very distinct jobs.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Once your engine has run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where the car has ended up.

Very rarely does it leave lasting damage when it is noticed quickly.

## Burridge: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Wherever it has come to rest in Burridge — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a street beside Swim School Academy Burridge — the van travels to your car.

What was put in, roughly the quantity, plus if your engine has been run: we check before all else, because those decide the job.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave together after the tank is emptied, on the spot.

Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

After that, the filter: cleaned, or changed when it has to be. Then fresh diesel, then a test of the car.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we arrive.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The final step is to prime the fuel system on fresh diesel.

You drive off as soon as our technicians have started the car, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway around Burridge or in a bay by Swanwick.

It is checked on clean diesel to confirm it runs correctly before our technicians leave.

No garage is needed at any point, with the whole job done on the spot.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

## AdBlue drains across Hampshire, Burridge included

Over the SO postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue call-outs around Burridge reach most of Hampshire as well, Whiteley, Curbridge and Park Gate among them.

Phone and check rather than guess if you are by a county line, or somewhere tricky to explain.

Burridge is a rural village, and a call-out drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it sits, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Burridge

Every job is different, and so not one single price would be fair.

The price changes first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it rests on where the vehicle is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Whiteley Community Centre.

That's why each call from Burridge starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it has run.

Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Before anyone sets off, you are told the quote on the phone. And you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

As our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty include misfuelling.

## Beside the car in Burridge, still?
