# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Butt Lane: Why It Happens

Stop here for a moment when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out right where the car sits in Butt Lane, is usually what it needs when caught before the engine runs.

Here in advance? Then the rest explains how it comes about and what to stop it ever happening.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels in Woodshutts, like those in Butt Lane, carry on two fluids; the motor takes just your diesel.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to fresh them, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Plenty of cars have a single flap for both, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think what cap it needs.

It's in the gap that the slip lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Butt Lane

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off West Avenue, or on the way home in the car park at The Corner Pin.

Then the vehicle is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Whether it takes place in Red Bull or the middle of Butt Lane, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Coalpit Hill or a forecourt around Butt Lane, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.

- Many motors fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Check for it.

- The handbook says which it is when the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Kidsgrove? Check with the person who drove the car last before you set off, rather than once the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever in Staffordshire, follow this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Bowling Alley Street.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It seems silly. It works.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both sit under a flap, confirm it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Step five is off limits.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Butt Lane?

Don't start your motor: that's where the short order of things begins.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Tesco, Sainsbury's or another — the staff will normally help roll the vehicle clear, if you ask.

Your own drive in Butt Lane is where it should stay.

Where the engine has run already, pull over somewhere safe and turn the vehicle off.

Butt Lane lies under 5 miles from the M6; on it, use the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Stoke-on-Trent, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Butt Lane.

## When our engineers arrive in Butt Lane, what happens?

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside St Saviour's CofE Academy, near The Baptist Church Butt Lane or on your own driveway.

We ask what got in, about how much, and whether it has run, because the replies determine this work and the quote.

Nobody heads out until you have heard our price by phone.

Then your tank is emptied and the system rinsed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or changed as needed.

Then our technicians fire it up and check it runs correctly before we leave.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine hasn't run need about half an hour once our engineers are there.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
