# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Buttershaw? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep the motor off — and the ignition too.

Chemically, AdBlue is just urea in water.

The trouble begins once it's pulled through the pump — it will not ignite, and it won't combine with diesel.

If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully purged where the car stands around Buttershaw.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Buttershaw, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do right away

Do:

- So no one can turn the ignition on, pull the keys out.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all close.

- Which product, and roughly how much quantity? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and we can see.

- The van finds you fastest with a postcode starting BD6 3, or just the name of a street close by, and so phone from the spot.

Never do these:

- Do not start the engine, even for a moment to shift your car.

- Many diesels power their fuel pump the moment the ignition comes on, so keep the vehicle off.

- No more fuel added. The AdBlue will not mix, so it's pointless.

- Leave the vehicle where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance down Reevy Road.

- Draining your tank on your own by the road isn't worth trying.

The staff working at any Buttershaw filling station — the Tesco among them — will normally lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

At your own drive, don't move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

From a dedicated tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, treating what your engine lets out.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

Once your pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it waits beneath your diesel, which is why a car topped up in Beck Hill yesterday and not started stays the simple one, as long as no one turns the key.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow channels; meanwhile, because it attacks some metals, each part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains inside.

By daybreak, a car sitting in Buttershaw with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it is just in your tank, nothing changes.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing past them, and so the water part harms them by itself.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

A fault of thin fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol from the Texaco.

It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it's inside that tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

It doesn't burn, and so it cannot just be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Wibsey or the middle of Buttershaw.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever in West Yorkshire your car has stopped.

## Buttershaw: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not on purpose. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, now and then under one flap, and muddling them up is easy after dark.

Mostly it's not the filling station: a driver buys a bottle driving home and pours it in outside the house.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Farfield Primary and Nursery School.

Someone pours the bottle in at home, just off Reevy Road West, as the day ends.

Else, after dark by Barley Mow, the car gets refilled by someone opening that flap for the first time.

Rented cars, new cars, company cars, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least known vehicles see it most.

Anywhere across West Yorkshire, Buttershaw as well, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first response: leave it switched off.

## Buttershaw: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

Your filter and pipework have had it pulled along, and any running time takes it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Perhaps coming back from Wibsey Community Garden, or part way across Buttershaw, your engine might run lumpy, smoke, lose power, flash your dash or cut out.

Stop when safe. Switch off. Keep it off instead of restarting it to check.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M606, under 3 miles from Buttershaw, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Mileage counts: every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into the system, so heading for Bradford, under 3 miles away, makes a far larger job than crossing Buttershaw to the car park by St Aidan.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the engine has been run, and we do all of it where the vehicle has stopped.

Spotted early, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

## What clearing AdBlue from a diesel involves around Buttershaw

A road beside Faizan E Raza Masjid, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station: anywhere your car has come to rest around Buttershaw, we travel to it.

What got in, about the quantity, plus if your engine has turned over: our technicians ask before all else, because those shape the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one after that tank is drained, on the spot.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush matters: the whole system is cleaned all the way through since residue won't flush out by itself.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Engine not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Finally, the fuel system is primed with fresh diesel.

Whether it is a parking bay outside Low Moor or a driveway around Buttershaw, that is where our engineers start the engine and you set off.

The test before we go is that it runs properly on new diesel.

As the job is done in full where your car is, a garage never comes into it.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once the job is done.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Buttershaw: the cost of fixing it

There is no honest single quote, since the jobs are not the same.

Three things change the price: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight gap behind Wibsey Cenotaph.

That's why every call from Buttershaw starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run.

Given them, a range shrinks to a single firm figure.

The price is quoted on the call, before a van leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
