# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Buttsole: Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page aside for now, leave the ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Buttsole.

Reading before the event? In that case what follows explains why it happens and how to prevent it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads round Buttsole and Heronden carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own.

Many of motors have a single flap for both, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## Buttsole: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Dover Road, or on the way home in the car park at The Five Bells With B & B.

New-to-you vehicles are second, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers differently, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

No part halts the tip after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Buttsole or out in Eastry.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these first, on a forecourt around Buttsole or a drive over in Selson. Seconds, no more.

- Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually aren't.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — plenty of motors show what goes in each inlet right there.

- Cannot find it beside the diesel inlet? In that case check beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook will say where.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Sandwich? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

On the day the warning comes on — anywhere it is across Kent — a routine to follow.

- Turn off once parked — flat ground, engine off, and not rushed by Lower Street at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It works.

- Both behind a single flap? Then make sure the lid on the diesel side stays closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and look once more — making sure the diesel filler remained shut throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Step five is out.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Buttsole?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

On a forecourt — Gulf, Shell or another — the attendants will normally help roll the car away, if you ask.

Your own drive in Buttsole is the place it should stay.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next junction is the place to come off when you're on the M20, under 15 miles from Buttsole.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Canterbury, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Buttsole.

## Our arrival in Buttsole, and what occurs next

Our van reaches your car wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside St Mary the Blessed, or outside Eastry Church of England Primary School.

Which liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask because those answers set both work and quote.

No one sets off before you've heard our price by phone.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes away by itself. That is why it matters more.

Filter cleaned or, where it must be, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a check of the car.

The motor is started next and tested to confirm it runs properly, all before our engineers go.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our engineers get there, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

Your car does not need to shift.

Draining takes place on the spot, whether a drive, a street near 10th Deal Eastry Scout Group, or a lay-by on the way to Eastry Picnic Site.

Guessing won't help at the back of Saint Mary The Virgin, on a boundary, or anywhere awkward to describe; ring and ask.

## The short version for Buttsole drivers

Always, the cap; after that, the tip.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave the vehicle off then call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere across Kent.
