# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Buxted

Pause here for a moment when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your engine has not run, it is emptied and fully rinsed where your vehicle is in Buxted.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it does not — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Many modern diesels around Five Ash Down, like those in Buxted, run on two fluids; the motor takes just your diesel.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where a spray cleans the fumes.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Other vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place the two side by side behind one flap.

Diesel gets filled on every filling station call-out, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less regularly, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Buxted: how it happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Haste comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off High Street, or heading home in the car park outside The Buxted Inn.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Buxted or out in Potters Green.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Buxted forecourt or a driveway out in Ringles Cross, take a couple of seconds on these before anything goes in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Check for it.

- Can't find it next to your diesel filler? In that case check beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, anywhere across East Sussex, use this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Church Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Never carry on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Buxted?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting your motor.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom instead of mixing — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the JET, the Shell or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Buxted.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

Come off the M23 — under 15 miles out of Buxted — at the next junction.

A short hop across Buxted is a smaller job than a run towards Brighton and Hove, under 25 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival around Buxted, and what takes place next

Our technicians come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Buxted CofE Primary School, near Buxted Methodist Church or on your own driveway.

Those answers determine the work and our quote, so our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

No one sets off before you have heard our price over the phone.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, after your tank is drained.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes away by itself. Hence it matters more.

The filter flushed or, where needed, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of the car.

We don't leave until it has been started and is running correctly.

If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

Anywhere it stands — beside St. Mary the Virgin, in a lay-by heading to Buxted Scout Group, at home — that is where it is emptied.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of St Margaret The Queen Buxted.
