# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cadnam: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Cadnam.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to make sure it does not — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Not one liquid but two: that is how many modern diesels around Cadnam and Lower Canterton run, with diesel feeding your motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel goes in on each filling station call-out, again and again.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs in Cadnam

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Southampton Road before work, or in the car park outside The White Hart on the way home.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Bartley or the heart of Cadnam: it is the same few seconds either way.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt in Cadnam or a drive over in Copythorne. A few seconds, that's all.

- Check the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally aren't.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.

- The handbook says where it lives when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Ashurst New Forest.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Hampshire that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Old Cross Road.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — once you've located the filler and read the cap.

- Both under one flap? Then make sure the cap on the diesel filler is still closed before lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and look again that the diesel cap never came off.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Cadnam: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

On a forecourt — Texaco, Esso or another — the attendants will normally help roll your car away, if you ask.

Your own drive around Cadnam is the place it should stay.

Already run? Pull over when it's safe, then turn off.

Come off the M27 — under a mile out of Cadnam — at the first junction.

Distance counts — a short hop across Cadnam makes a smaller job than heading under 10 miles to Southampton — so tell us about how far it went.

## When our technicians get there around Cadnam, what happens?

Anywhere the vehicle came to rest, be it by Bartley Church of England Junior School, beside Methodist Church or at home, our van travels to it.

Our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run, since those replies determine the work and our quote.

The price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, after your tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter flushed or, where it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of the vehicle.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Unstarted vehicles mostly need a half-hour job from arrival. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.
