# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Cae Clyd: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your motor has not run, it's emptied and thoroughly cleaned where your car is around Cae Clyd.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

No single liquid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels near Cae Clyd and Maen-Offeren carry, with diesel for your motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, different fillers.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur around Cae Clyd?

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and letting it run out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Penfforddgoch, or at The Wynne's Arms on the way home after work.

The old car's filler is where the hand goes — but a rental car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: a new car.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

It takes a few seconds, be it in Manod or bang in the centre of Cae Clyd.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Cae Clyd forecourt or a drive out in Blaenau Ffestiniog, spend a few seconds over these before any goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.

- The handbook shows which it is if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Blaenau Ffestiniog, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever in Gwynedd, follow this routine.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush beside Tyddyn Gwyn on the verge.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have found your filler and read it.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish when that tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently using the own spout.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Cae Clyd?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting your engine.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the car on.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the the nearest petrol station or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive in Cae Clyd.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Cae Clyd sits under 50 miles from the Moreton Spur; on it, take the first exit.

A short hop across Cae Clyd is a smaller job than a run towards Bangor, under 25 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival around Cae Clyd, and what occurs next

Our technicians come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside the local primary school, close to Hyfrydfa or on your own drive.

Both the work and our quote rest on three replies — which liquid, what quantity, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask.

During the call itself, you hear our quote — before dispatch.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, once your tank is drained.

More than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals form, some metals corrode, and nothing washes away on its own, however long it sits.

Filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a test of your vehicle.

Before we leave, we start the car and confirm that it's running properly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once our engineers arrive, provided the motor has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in many insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.
