# Caldecott: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Caldecott.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Many newer diesels on the roads around Caldecott and Northcourt carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on many cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel gets filled at every filling station visit, week in, week out.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally comes from a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think which cap to use.

The error lives in that gap.

## Caldecott: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Hermitage Road before work, or in the car park at White Horse on the way home.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — since a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

No part halts the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Caldecott or out in Abingdon-on-Thames.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Culham or a forecourt in Caldecott.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside your fuel flap often says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Look for it.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Culham.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — wherever you are around Oxfordshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Pull in on level, engine off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Blacknall Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap, then check again — confirm your diesel filler stayed shut throughout. After that, start the vehicle.

Find during the second or third stage that the bottle went into the diesel filler? That's where you stop.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Caldecott?

Short list, then. Top of that: the engine remains off.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of blending — and that is where the fuel is sucked from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the Marcham Road Service Station or the BP, ask the attendants to help push your car away from the petrol pump.

Your own driveway in Caldecott is the place it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

On the Wheatley Spur, under 10 miles from Caldecott, that means the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Oxford, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Caldecott.

## What takes place when we arrive in Caldecott

The van comes to the vehicle wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Preston Road Community Centre, or by Caldecott Primary School.

Our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run, because the replies determine the work and the quote.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody sets off.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

Filter cleaned or, if needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle.

The engine is fired up next and checked to confirm it runs smoothly, all before our technicians go.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after our technicians arrive, as long as the motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.

The car does not need to move.

Anywhere it stands — beside St Helen's Church, in a layby heading to Caldecott Recreation Ground, on a drive — that's where it gets drained.

If you're near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Abingdon Baptist Church, ring and ask instead of guessing.
