# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Calderhead

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case put this page aside for now, leave your ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done just where your car sits around Calderhead, is normally all it takes when found before the motor runs.

Not happened yet? Below, the page covers the reasons it takes place and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels in Dykehead, as well as Calderhead, run on two liquids; the motor takes just your diesel.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to clean it, from a separate tank.

There is a filler for each tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Calderhead: how it takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Foundry Road, perhaps at Brandy Bar on the way home that evening.

New-to-you cars come next, too. Hire cars, new motors and company motors put their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in as readily, and once the tip starts, nothing halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Calderhead or out in Shotts.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a Calderhead forecourt or a drive out in Torbothie, take a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it lives when the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Shotts? Ask whoever drove the car last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across North Lanarkshire that is.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, motor off, and not rushed beside Kirk Road at the roadside.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've found your filler and read the cap.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish when the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently using its built-in spout.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Find at the second or third step that AdBlue went into the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Stage five is off limits.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Calderhead?

Do not start your motor: that is where the short order of things starts.

Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the Shell or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the pump.

On your own drive in Calderhead? So the car remains put.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M8, under 3 miles from Calderhead, that means the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Glasgow, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Calderhead.

## Our arrival in Calderhead, and what occurs next

Outside the local primary school, near St Patricks Church or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

The replies determine this work and the quote, and so we ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

Nobody sets off until you've had the price over the phone.

Then your tank is drained and your system cleaned thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Your engine is started next and checked to confirm it runs correctly, all before our engineers head off.

Unrun cars mostly need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; many include cover for misfuelling.

Your car doesn't need to move.

We drain it where it is — a side street near Shotts Ironworks Bowling Club, a lay-by on the way to Stane Gardens, a drive.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Shotts Calderhead-Erskine Parish, ring and ask instead of assuming.
