# California: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and the ignition as well.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

Being water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble only starts when the pump starts pulling it.

If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and carefully cleaned where your car sits around California.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## What to do right now, California: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do:

- Pocket the keys, which stops someone turning the electrics on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly how much, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Tell us a postcode starting FK1 2, or whatever street lies nearest, and the van reaches you straight — so call wherever you are.

Not to do:

- Moving your car just a short way is no reason to start the engine.

- Plenty of diesels run their fuel pump the instant your ignition goes on, so keep the vehicle off.

- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short stretch down Main Street.

- Draining that tank on your own beside the road is not one to try.

Rolling your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever California forecourt you're on, the Esso or any other.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it remains exactly as it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Nothing in a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and no part of it was meant to go that way.

It does not blend. Once it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel.

It drops, because it is denser than diesel, and settles low where the intake draws its supply from.

When your system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Before then it waits beneath the diesel, and that is why a vehicle topped up in Middlerig yesterday and not started remains the simple case, provided no one turns your key.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there.

Overnight, a vehicle parked in California with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; if it's just inside that tank, nothing changes.

Then there is the water: it offers no lubrication to the parts that need it most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger issue?

An issue of thinned fuel is what you end up with after fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Murco.

Mixed into the diesel and left unused, it is no threat for now; using the engine is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It does not burn, and so it cannot simply be run through.

Whether the vehicle is in Wallacestone or the centre of California, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other slip, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion outlast the following tankful.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

Anywhere in Falkirk the vehicle has stopped, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue still inside the tank: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in California: how it ends up there

Plenty of vehicles place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and in dim light the two may appear the same. Nobody intends it.

A bottle bought while heading home and tipped in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the typical route.

The ways it occurs are few and familiar.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside the local primary school the top-up is hurried.

After work, a bottle goes in on a drive near B8028.

Otherwise, after dark outside the pub in the village, the vehicle gets topped up by a driver using that flap for the first time.

The least known vehicles get it most — rentals, new ones, company cars, and the other car of a family with both fuels.

Wherever in Falkirk, California as well, the mistake does not change, and neither does the first step: leave it switched off.

## California: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and each injector, having passed through the filter and pipework.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard lights or cutting out: any may appear, maybe part way across California or coming back from Burnside Community Woodland.

Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Leave it off instead of restarting it to check.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the M9, under 3 miles from California, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

A quick hop across California to the car park by Blackbraes & Shieldhill Parish Church is one thing; driving towards Stirling, under 15 miles away, is another, since every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So distance counts.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once the engine has been run.

If it is spotted quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel around California: what it takes

Wherever it has stopped in California — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a road beside War Memorial — the van comes to your car.

What got in, about how much, plus whether the engine has been run: we ask first, because those shape the job.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one after your tank is drained, on the spot.

Your system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Next, the filter: cleaned, or changed if it has to be. After that clean diesel, and then a check of the car.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers get there, provided the engine hasn't run.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to prime the fuel system on fresh diesel.

Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where the car is parked, at Polmont or on a driveway around California.

Before we go, our technicians confirm it is running properly with clean diesel in.

As the job is done in its entirety where your car is, a workshop never comes into it.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

## About California

California is a small village in Falkirk, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 190 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. California sits near the communities of Blackbraes, Easter Shieldhill, and Shieldhill, and is approximately 12 miles from the city of Stirling. California has a population of around 790 residents, who enjoy the scenic riverside setting. California is located in central Scotland, about 341 miles northwest of London.

## AdBlue drains across Falkirk, California included

Over the FK postcode area, the vans answering AdBlue jobs in California reach much of Falkirk as well, Blackbraes, Easter Shieldhill and Shieldhill among them.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than guessing.

Wherever your vehicle sits — a drive at home, a side street, a car park, a forecourt — we empty it on the spot, and there's no need to bring it to us; which suits California, a village, well.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around California?

There is no fair single quote, since the jobs aren't the same.

Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open driveway is simpler for a van to reach safely than a tight spot behind Wallacestone Memorial.

Before any figure, not after, each call from California opens with the same three checks: the fuel, the amount, and if it ran.

The answers turn a range into a straight quote.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## California: still alongside your car?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with your car is to leave it.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, and whether the engine ran is all our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder throughout Falkirk, California included.
