# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in California: Why It Occurs and How to Stop It

Keep the engine and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 first — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Usually, if your motor has not turned, it's emptied and fully flushed where your car sits around California.

Here before the event? In that case what follows covers how it comes about and how to stop it ever happening.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel feeds the motor — yet plenty of current diesels driven around California and Stoke carry another fluid as well.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on a lot of vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel gets filled at every forecourt visit, again and again.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## California: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off St John's Road before work, or in the car park outside The Harp on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and if it's gone, limp mode follows.

New-to-you cars are second, as well. Rentals, new vehicles and company cars place their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after begun, keeps on.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of California or out in Rose Hill.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt around California or a drive over in Broke Hall. Seconds, that's all.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Lift the flap and check for a label — many vehicles mark which belongs in each inlet just there.

- The handbook shows where it lives if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Derby Road? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

Anywhere around Suffolk the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, motor off, and not rushed by Cauldwell Hall Road at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, yet it works.

- Both behind one flap? So confirm the cap on the diesel side is still closed before lifting the bottle.

- Finish when your tank fills or the bottle is empty; before that, tip gently using its own spout.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in California?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — BP, Applegreen or any other — the attendants will usually help push your car away, when you ask.

Your own drive around California is the place it stays.

When your engine has run already, pull over safely then turn it off.

California sits under 50 miles from the M11; on it, use the next exit.

A short hop across California is a smaller job than a run towards Colchester, under 25 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## California: what occurs when our technicians get there

Wherever the car came to rest, whether outside Clifford Road Primary School & Nursery, beside St John's United Reformed Church or at home, our van travels to it.

Which liquid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: our engineers ask since the answers decide both work and quote.

During the call itself, you hear the price — ahead of dispatch.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, once that tank is emptied.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

The filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a check of your vehicle.

We don't go until it has been started and is running correctly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run need about half an hour after our engineers arrive.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of many insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.

## About California itself

California is a suburban area in Suffolk, situated on the coast in the Eastern region of England, with an elevation of around 42 metres. California sits near the cities of Colchester and Ipswich, and is close to smaller places like Rose Hill and Racecourse. California has a population of approximately 10812 people, predominantly living in terraced housing. California is located around 67.6 miles from London, making it a commuter base for some residents.

## California and Suffolk: AdBlue drains across the area

California is a residential suburb, and our teams that cover it also work the towns around it, Racecourse and Ipswich among them, across the IP postcode area.

A postcode starting IP4 5 gets the van to you fastest.

No need to move the car.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Newbury Road Dog Park, a side street near Clifford Road Air Raid Shelter Museum: our technicians drain the car where it is.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of Blooming Fuchsia sign? By a county line? Checking is better than assuming, so phone.

## In short, for California motorists

Always, the cap; after that, the pour.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Leave it switched off and ring 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, throughout Suffolk.
