# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Calow: Why It Happens

Pause reading for a moment when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Around Calow, finding it before the engine turns usually leaves draining and a thorough flush on the spot.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the why it happens and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Not one fluid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels near Calow and Brimington Common carry, with diesel feeding the motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

Other vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both together under one flap.

Filling your diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Calow?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off Top Road, or heading home in the car park outside The Anvil.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is the second factor: an unfamiliar vehicle.

No part stops the pour after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Cock Alley or the middle of Calow: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Look at these before pouring, at a forecourt around Calow or a drive out in Calow Green. A few seconds, no more.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Chesterfield? Ask the person who drove it last before you set off, rather than when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

Anywhere in Derbyshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Dark Lane.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, perhaps, but it works.

- Both under one flap? Then confirm the cap on the diesel filler stays closed before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, then check again — confirm the diesel cap stayed shut throughout. Only then, start your car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Calow?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

Don't switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is drawn from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it's the BP or the JET, ask the staff to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump.

At home around Calow? Then your car stays where it is.

Already started? Pull over once it is sensible, then switch off.

Calow sits under 3 miles from the M1; on it, use the next junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Sheffield, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Calow.

## Calow: what occurs when we turn up

The van reaches the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, beside St Peter, or outside Calow CofE VC Primary School.

What liquid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our technicians ask because the replies set the work and price.

Nobody sets off until you have heard our quote over the phone.

Then that tank is emptied and your system rinsed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter cleaned or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a test of your car.

Before leaving, we fire it up and confirm that it is running smoothly.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor has not run need about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## About Calow itself

Calow is a village in Derbyshire, situated on the riverside in the East Midlands region of England. Calow sits at an elevation of 141 metres, approximately 10.8 miles from Sheffield and 130.6 miles from London. Calow has a population of around 1313 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing, and is near to other local places such as Cock Alley, Hady, and Bolehill.

## Calow and Derbyshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Calow is a village, and the vans that cover it also work the places near it, Hady and Bolehill among them, across the S postcode area.

Give a postcode beginning S44 5, and the van gets there fastest.

Moving the car is not necessary.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to Calow Community Centre, a lay-by on the way to Eastwood Park, a driveway.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Brimington Common Methodist Chirch? By a county line? Asking beats guessing, so phone.

## For Calow people, the short version

First, the cap; then, the pour.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in Derbyshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — so leave it off and ring 0333 366 0103.
